Celia Pennington

Summary: There is a Celia/Cecila Pennington who married Reuben Cornett and lived in Grayson County where they raised their family. She is listed as the daughter of Andrew and Hattie Pennington in a Cherokee Application. This is impossible as the Andrew she listed was younger than she was. However, it appears that her maiden name was Pennington. Other statements also indicate that she was the only sibling to Samuel Pennington.

The only other known statement on the family was made by Celia's brother, Claban Pennington in his Cherokee Application No. 5190. He stated that 'My father's mother ... died when my father was quite a boy. There were only two children--a boy and a girl. My father was raised a bound boy by a man by the name of Randlow in Powell's Valley.'

My Ceila (was) born 11 Aug 1793 somewhere. I got Smythe Co Va, but I doubt that is the county possible. Now I believe early on it would be the Grayson district now Grayson Co. I had heard stories handed down there was some indian in our family but I could never find it and didn't dream it would be from the Pennington side of the family. Could be. Interesting.

Reuben Cornett and Celia Pendleton/Pennington as the marriage Lic in Grayson Co has it and I have a copy of it. The date is 16 Oct 1815 Bk l page one in Independence, Grayson, Va. Her bondsman was Joseph Sutherland who I think is the son of Alexander Sutherland.

I met a descendant of Gincy Cornett in Elk Creek, Va., Bobby Jack Cornett who descends from Montgomery and wife Gerldine Roberts Cornett who decends from Gincy Jane. She has helped some, in fact she and her husband took me to the apple orchard where Reuben and Celia Cornett are buried and I have pictures of the tombstones. These were the only two (graves) located.

Penningtonsearch.net(?) is where I located my Cecila Pennington with father Benajah Pennington. I found she was the only child mentioned with her father Benajah Pennington but no wife. By her name is 3 and I figure she is the 3rd Celia. I figured her mother may be named Celia but don't really know. I had heard she had a brother who was killed at a very young age and I assumed she didn't have parents living when she married.

Comment: The way Celia Kilby (a different Celia) made some statements about the family in her Cherokee Application No. 5187 are interesting. She stated she was descended from Andrew and Hattie's son, Samuel Pennington. But when the question asked her to list all of Andrew's children, she only put down Celia Cornette. This would imply that Samuel and Celia were the only two children in the family.
