How to set up your computer to join #genealogy
The folloing instructions are for PC users if you are a MAC user
you can go to ircle.com for
software that will work for you. Sadly I know nothing about this
software but hopefully it sets up somewaht similaar.
PC USers
Go to mirc.com to download the
program. Download into a directory of your choice eg. c:\temp. Once
you have the file downloaded you can find it using your Windows
Explorer. Once found double click on it to execute the program and
install into a directory of your choise eg. C:\mirc.
When you start mIRC for the first time you will be asked to
register. That is your choice you can ignore and bypass it.
You will then be presented with the mIRC Options box.
Enter your name, email address, the nickname you wish to use when
online and an alternate nickname
In the box are a number of server sites. Look for a site that
starts with Starlink-IRC.
If there are none there then you will need to add at least one. To
do this click "ADD". In the "DESCRIPTION" box enter Genealogy -
Houston and in the IRC Server box enter
katy.TX.us.Starlink-IRC.org.
Group and Password is not required

Once you have all the servers that you wish added then just find
the one you want in the list; select it and click on "Connect to IRC
Server"
Once connected to the server a "mIRC Channels Folder" box will
appear. Just enter genealogy in the box and click "Join". That should
enter you into the channel.

Caution: Connection time may be extremely slow but once connect
everything should be OK.
