Mrs. Woodrow Stamper (nee Georgia Mae Caskey), West Libery, KY supplies information on the Caskey family that will be of wide interest. In researching Morgan County families for the past 25 years, it was found that more of them connect in some way to Thomas Caskey and Lydia Hopkins Caskey than any other.
A story about Elie McGuire of Ezel (Morgan Co) took me all the way back to 1813 and still back another generation to Orange County, New York. A story on the Blairs did the same as did stories on the Lewises, Days and others.
Lydia Hopkins was the daughter of Garner (Gardner) Hopkins who was born July 16, 1750, and Polly Chambers. Garner and Polly were married in Orange County, New York in April 1773 according to Mrs. Stamper's records from family Bibles.
Garner served in the Revolutionary War and is buried, as is Thomas Caskey, in an old cemetery about two miles north of West Liberty, known as the Charlie Cottle farm and prior to that the Potter farm. He was discharged at West Point and later while a resident of Floyd county (that section to become Morgan) applied for a pension. He died June 4, 1832.
Children of Thomas Caskey and Lydia Hopkins Caskey were Mary born Oct. 7, 1791; John born Oct. 9, 1793; Hannah born Nov. 15, 1795; Gardner born May 26, 1798; Robert born Oct. 15, 1800; Jane born De. 29, 1802; Margaret born Dec 22., 1804; Eleanor born May 7, 1807; Lydia born Oct. 5, 1808; Thomas born Dec. 31, 1810; Samuel born Oct. 16, 1812; William born Jan. 16, 1815; Sally Anne born Jan. 1, 1818.
Mary Caskey married Joshua Day Nov. 18, 1813; John Caskey married Hannah Lewis April 4, 1815 and a second marriage to Abbie Brown; Hannah Caskey married James McGuire Oct. 15, 1813; Gardner Caskey married Elizabeth Blair Aug. 14, 1821; Robert married a Dyer Jan. 1, 1823; Jane Caskey married John Wells Sept. 6, 1824; Margaret married Jessee Day Aug. 24, 1820; Eleanor married Francis Lewis Feb. 5, 1827; Lydia married William Blair May 18, 1827; Thomas married an Elliott; Samuel Caskey married Catharine Wagner May 31, 1832; William married Becky Gilmore Oct. 27, 1836; Sally Anne married Gardner Dyer March 22, 1838. One family source gives Jane's marriage to a Gibbs.
Children of Gardner Caskey and Elizabeth Blair were William, Thomas, Castle, John, Jesse, Alvin, Ann Day, Jane Day, Liz Day.
Children of William Caskey and Isobell Hord Roberts, his wife, were Elizabeth, James William (Buddy), Clarinda, Francis Marion, Emma and Ann Liza.
Children of James William (Buddy) and Eliza Alice Davis, his wife, were Ida May Caskey and William Amos Caskey.
Children of W.A. Caskey and Jannie Flora Prichard, his wife, are William Prichard Caskey, Robert Edward Caskey, Georgia Mae Caskey Stamper and Alice Isabelle Caskey Oldfield, all of West Liberty, KY.
Thomas, son of Gardner and Elizabeth Blair Caskey, was the father of Willie Caskey of Hagerstown, Maryland, who was born in Morgan County and who has contributed much data on the Caskeys and other Morgan County families.
During Floyd County court, Prestonsburg, Feb. 26, 1810, a deed was accepted to be recorded from Henry French to Thomas Caskey, Gardner Hopkins and Thomas Lewis. An early Floyd County court order reported on the road from the line of Thomas Lewis to the county line. John Perry was superintendent and Daniel Peyton was to allot hands.
