What Is It and Why Do We Do It?

 

·        Disciples Youth and adult sponsors travel to Washington D.C. and New York City to expose participants to a larger world view, challenging them to gain an understanding of their responsibilities as Christians and through this to gain a deeper spiritual growth.

·        In Washington, D.C. participants worship at National City Christian Church, tour the Holocaust Museum, visit the nation’s Capital and several national monuments, meet with groups and organizations for educational opportunities.

·        In New York participants visit the United Nations headquarters, Park Avenue Christian Church, meet with leaders of various social organizations, participate in hands-on mission work in the city and attend a Broadway musical.

 

Theme

 

 

·         “Faces of Poverty”

·        Examine the problem of poverty

·        Learn how world leaders, social organizations and the church are responding

·        Attend meetings and briefings and work directly with those affected by poverty

 

 

When

 

·        Participants meet Saturday morning, March 11, 2000, in the Dallas Fort Worth airport to fly as a group to Washington D.C.

·        Tuesday, March 14, group travels by AmTrak to New York City

·        Saturday evening, March 18, group flies from New York to Dallas/Fort Worth airport

 

Cost

 

·        $1000 per participant (your congregation/region may offer scholarship support)

·        includes everything except meals (minimum of $400) and spend money

 

Who Can Participate?

 

·        Disciples youth in Junior or Senior years of High School

·        At least 16 years of age

·        From congregations in the regions of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and the Southwest

 

When Are Applications Due?

 

·        November 15, 1999

·        Must include a $400 deposit and passport-sized photo of the applicant

 

When Can We Expect More Information?

 

·        Packets will be sent to all applicants during the first week of December with forms to complete and return by January 18, 2000.  Included in the packets will be instructions on an essay to be completed on the focus area (poverty).  Balance of trip fee is to be sent along with completed forms and essays.  Deposits are refundable up to January 4, 2000.
