- Monroe County, KY: Jesse COMPTON was born 12/8/1851, in the southern part of Monroe County,
KY, where he was reared and still resides. His father, David COMPTON, a native of NC, was born in
1811; removed in youth with his parents to Monroe County, KY, where he now resides. He served two
years as a loyal soldier in the 37th KY Mounted Infantry. He is the son of William COMPTON, who
died about 1833. David married Lucy W., daughter of Jesse and Sophia (Turner) Hood, of Monroe
County (born in 1822, died in 1883), and their offspring are Jane (Austin), Riley, Samuel, Martha
(Robinson), Abigail (deceased), Hiram J., Jesse, Thomas, and Laura B. (Jenkins). Jesse married
2/24/1876 to Sarah Copes (b. 4/25/1856, daughter of George Copes and Nancy Keith) of Clay
County, TN. Children by Jesse and Sarah: Claudy, Cancel, Nunie (deceased) and Lucy.
Mr. COMPTON is a farmer, having 100 acres of productive land in a good state of cultivation. He is
also engaged in distilling both fruit and corn, at which he has been successful. In politics he affiliates
with the Republican party. He is now a trustee of schools and overseer of roads.

- Hopkins County, KY: Rev. Samuel D. COMPTON was born in Hopkins County, KY, March 19, 1829,
and is a son of Thomas A. and Martha H. (Hutchinson) COMPTON, natives of VA and of English
descent. Thomas A. COMPTON, at the age of 22 years, about 1816, and while yet a single man,
came to Hopkins County, KY, where he bought wild land near Nebo, improved a farm, upon which he
resided until his death in 1849, in his fifty-fifth year. He served during the latter part of the war of 1812,
at Norfolk, VA. He was a natural mechanic, and although he had never regularly learned any trade,
he could turn his hand to almost any branch of mechanism, and made all his own wagons, agricultural implements and furniture. He was for many years an officer in the KY State militia. He and wife were
members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. After her husband's death, however, Mrs. Martha A.
COMPTON joined the Baptist Church, of which she was a member until her death in 1874, in her 74th
year. Reuben COMPTON, the grandfather of our subject, was a veteran in the Revolutionary War,
having served for over three years with Gen. Morgan's riflemen. After his father's death the care and
support of his widowed mother devolved upon our subject, Samuel D. He continued to farm the
home place on shares for several years, and in 1859 bought a part of the old homestead, to which he
has added from time to time until he now owns a well improved farm of some 400 acres, where he is extensively engaged in farming and stock raising. He was a magistrate for this district for one term
of four years. He was married 2/23/1859 to Miss Ella A. Townsend, a native of NC and a daughter of
Wilson and Elizabeth (Ramsey) Townsend. Eight children have blessed this union; four sons and
three daughters are living. Mr. and Mrs. COMPTON are members of the Missionary Baptist Church,
in which he has been a licensed preacher for nearly 30 years, and a regularly ordained elder for
more than 15 years. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity, has advanced to the Royal Arch
degree, and has been W.M. of his lodge. In politics, Mr. COMPTON is a Democrat. His eldest son,
Theodore N. COMPTON, at the age of 17, was six feet and five inches in height, and weight 210
pounds. He joined the church at the age of 11, was licensed to preach at the age of 16, and
regularly ordained at 17. He has had official charge of 3 different churches, and is at present pastor
of the Clayville Baptist Church, of Webster County, although only in his 19th year.

- Metcalfe County, KY: John W. COMPTON was born in Edmonton, Metcalfe County, KY, 6/17/1839,
and is the eldest of seven children - 3 sons and 4 daughters - born to Joseph R. and Martha N.
(Hatchett) COMPTON, the former a native of Barren County, KY, and the latter of Pittsylvania County,
VA. They were of Irish and English descent, and were born 3/2/1815 and 12/29/1817, respectively.
Joseph R. COMPTON in early life learned the blacksmith's trade at Glasgow, which he continued
to follow, in connection with farming, until his death, which occurred 1/30/1860. For many years he
was a captain in old State militia. His father, John COMPTON, was a native of VA, but immigrated
to Barren County, KY, in a very early day. Mrs. Martha N. COMPTON is yet living. From her
girlhood she has been a devoted member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Her father
Archibald Hatchett, was also a native of VA, and served at Norfolk during the war of 1812. He, in
about 1827, immigrated to southwestern KY. Her mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Hatchett, is living, in her
87th year, and receives a pension for her husband's services. John W. COMPTON received a
good English education in youth at the common and select schools of the County, and has also
very materially added to his early training by his own exertions, and is a man of wide and varied
general information, having been a close and careful reader all his life. After his father's death he
followed the blacksmith's trade for about one year, and during that time commenced the study of
law, often working with his book open on the forge. At the breaking out of the late civil war he took
a very active and determined stand on the Union side and in December 1861, went to Columbia
with the intention of enlisting in the 3rd KY Volunteer Infantry (Federal service), but when at the
picket line a fight ensued between the Federal troops and a detachment of TX Rangers, in which
he was severely wounded, from the effects of which he has never fully recovered. In July, 1865, he
was admitted to the bar, and has ever since practiced law with most abundant success in Metcalfe
and adjoining counties. In 1866 he was elected County attorney, and resigned that position in 1867
to run for the Legislature on the Union Democratic ticket, but was defeated by 40 votes. In 1871 he
was appointed school commissioner for Metcalfe County, and was elected to the same office in
1873, serving four years in all. He married, 3/21/1872 to Carrie Glazebrook, a native of Glasgow,
Barren County, KY, b. 11/27/1841. She is the daughter of Joseph and Lucinda (Pace) Glazebrook.
Two sons and one daughter have blessed their union, viz: Ada, deceased, William G. and
Clarence S., Mr. COMPTON and wife are consistent members of the church, he of the Cumberland Presbyterian and she of the Christian Church. He has been a ruling elder in his church for the past
twenty years, and is also a member of the Masonic fraternity. In politics he is a Democrat, and is
one of the energetic and successful lawyers and prominent citizens of the County.

Hopkins Co, KY William Thomas TRICE Sr.

Arminty Jane COMPTON, b 1819 KY, m 1836 Hopkins Co, KY, David B TRICE.

I suspect that Sallie and Jane are sisters, but no proof yet, and don't know who the parents are
for either. Some researchers state that David and William Thomas are brothers, but if they are I
have not found the proof. William Thomas TRICE was son of Dabney TRICE and Unity Smith
THOMASSON, and was listed in his fathers will along with his sisters, brothers and a couple
of grandsons... no mention of David, which leads me to believe they are not brothers.

The TRICE's, THOMASSON's, LUNSFORD's and others came from NC and VA
beginning about 1815.
