Will of Thomas Compton - Spartanburg S.C.



In the name of God Amen. I Thomas Compton of the state of South Carolina 
and district of Spartanburg being weak in body but sound in mind and 
memory and knowing that it is appointed once for all men to die, do 
complete this my last will and Testament and desire it may be received 
as such.  In primus I must humbly begin and recommend my soul into the 
hands of Almighty God beseeching his most gracious acceptance of it 
and my body to be buried in decent Christian burial at the discretion of 
my executor here after named as to worldly estate.  I will and positively 
order that all my just debts be paid.  Item-  I give and bequeath unto my
beloved wife Rachel Compton my house and all my land together with the 
husband _______ (ultimately ?) thereunto belonging during her natural life 
or widowhood at her death or marriage.  I give unto my beloved sons 
Thomas Compton and Matthew Compton my house and all my land to 
be equally divided between them upon their paying James Compton and 
William Compton my sons fifty dollars each after the decease of their 
mother.  Item-  I give unto my son James Compton a saddle.  Item-  I give 
unto my daughter Delilah Compton my bay colt.
Item-  It is will and desire 
after the death of my beloved wife that the balance of my personal 
property be sold and that the money arising from such sale should be 
equally divided between my beloved children namely William and 
James and Delilah Compton and Mary House.  Lastly I nominate 
ordain and appoint my beloved wife and son Thomas Compton 
executrix and executor to this my last will and Testament hereby revoking
all others-     In testimony where of I have unto set my hand and seal this 
8th day of March eighteen hundred and seventeen.  Signed sealed and 
acknowledged in the presence of

By William Lancaster, esq., ordinary of said district- Personally appeared 
before me William and John Beardan who being duly sworn on the Holy 
evangalest of Almighty God doth make oath and say that they saw 
Thomas Compton sign seal, publish pronounce and declare the same 
to be and contain his last will and testament that he the said Thomas 
Compton was then of sound and disposing mind memory and 
understanding to the best of the deponents knowledge and belief and 
that they the William and John did sign their names as witnesses thereto 
at the request of the testator in his presence.  At the same time ___
(qualified) Thomas Compton Executor to Rachel Compton referring to 
her ability in writing.  Given under my hand the 24th of October 				Wm. Lancaster O.S.D.H
