Since all emmigrants came to America by boat in the early years, passenger lists of boats are a great way to verify the arrival of an ancestor as well as prove which family members arrived with them. Knowing the year (at least approximately) of arrival will help, and hopefully this list of the most likely ports of entry will also help. If you know the name of the boat and the port of entry you can get passenger information from the National Archives.
