Richard Hite provided information on Michael King and his ancestors [14 Oct 2001].
Michael King, born between 1695 and 1700 (still a minor in 1716, but married by 1719) probably in the area of Chowan County that later became Bertie County. He amy also have been born in Virginia. By 1719, he had married Isabel Bell (daughter of Robert Bell who died by 1738 in Bertie County). Michael King wrote a will in 1741 in Bertie County and died there by 1742, still a young man (no older than mid-40s). By 1743, his widow had remarried a man named Dyal. Michael’s father:
Henry King, born probably late 1660s or early 1670s, Nansemond County, Virginia. By 1714, Henry was living in the Salmon Creek area of what was then Chowan Precinct in North Carolina. His wife was named Catherine. Henry wrote his will in 1714 and died by 1716. At the time of his death, only one of his children (his son Henry) had reached the age of 21. The others all had court-appointed guardians.
The documentation for the generation preceding Henry is a bit questionable, but is probably right. He was supposedly a son of Michael King, who patented 300 acres in the Upper Parish of Nansemond County in 1667. The only document identifying children of Michael is a Bible record, created by Solomon King (a supposed great-grandson) more than a century later. This Bible states that Michael King was born in the city of Norwich in England, came to Virginia, married Elizabeth Hiry (or Cary, heard to read) and had six children – Nathan, William, Michael, Henry, John, and Elizabeth. The Bible also indicates that Michael lived in the Upper Parish of the Nansemond County on the southern branch of the Nansemond River. No other existing document identifies Michael’s children. He did leave a will and records indicate that it was probated in 1700, but the will itself is not known to have survived. A Bible record written as late as 1769 (the publication date of Solomon King’s Bible) has to be considered suspect as an identification of the children of someone who died as early as 1700. Land records, however, make it appear that the children identified by Solomon King probably were the children of Michael King. The sons all lived near him.
