Christian Tate was born in Baden, Germany in 1812. He married Caroline, born about 1827 in Germany. The estimated date of the marriage is 1851 in Germany. This has been a very elusive branch of the family tree to trace, primarily due to the spelling of the surname. With neither Christian nor Caroline able to speak English when they immigrated to America, their surname is found with a variety of spellings.
According to a 1900 census report of daughter Elizabeth Tate Godfrey, the family immigrated in 1857. Their first record in the United States is the 1860 Ohio census enumeration in Darke County, Patterson Township where they are listed as the C. Tait family. On the 1870 census the family has the surname of Taylor and finally by 1880, Tate. Even with the variety of different spellings, the family is the same as the names of the parents and children remain constant. Of great interest is the mother of Caroline who seems to be enumerated with the family on the 1870 report. Although her name is somewhat difficult to read it appears to be Maria Chatella, age 80, born in Germany as where both of her parents.
C.F. Tate, a farmer, had a 43 acre farm in the northwest portion of section 13 in Patterson Township, Darke County, Ohio. Death records from Darke County list a C.F. Tate, age 72 years, 5 months, 17 days as having died on September 10, 1885 in Patterson Township, Darke County, Ohio. He is buried in a cemetery in the township. To date, no record of death has been found for Caroline Tate.
