John and Janet Gunn lived in Glasgow,
Scotland, where thier first 4 children were born. Shortly belfore the birth
of John Gunn they moved to Melvick where John and Catherine were born.
Janet is believed to have died
in Scotland. In 1846, John came to Canada with
his daughters Catherine and Flora (and her family). Catherine would
have been about 13. Willaim had been here 10 years already.
William emigrated to Kingston,
Canada in 1836, where he met and became a good friend of Sir John A. Mac
Donald. He also took a prominent role in helping suppress the Rebellion
of 1837-38. In Kingston, William married Susan Douglas and
they moved to Inverhuron where William
held the positions of school inspector, post master
and reeve of Bruce Township. They later moved to Walkerton where William
became Clerk of the Surrogate Court.
