NOTE: This is my transcription of 1866 "apprenticeships" found in Book L of Talladega county Deed and Records, LDS film #1651151. Any errors are mine. Surnames found in these are BOGWELL, STEWART, WILLS and William H. THORNTON, Judge of Probate.

State of Alabama Talladega County
This indenture made and entered into this 3rd day of February 1866 between William H. Thornton, Judge of the Probate court of said county, and his successors in office, of the first part, and Larkin Bogwell of the same county of the second part, witnesseth that the said Judge has this day put placed, bound, and apprenticed unto the said Larkin Bogwell to dwell as an apprentice, Frank Bogwell a colored boy about eleven years of age until he the said Frank shall attain the full age of twenty one according to the statute in such cases made and provided. Proof having been made to said Judge, that said Frank has no parents in this State, and he is unable to provide support for himself.
And the said Larkin Bogwell for his part, for himself, his executors and administrators, consents and agrees that the said Frank shall be so bound and apprenticed to him, and that he for the use of said Frank will furnish a sufficiency of good and wholesome provisions, furnish all necessary clothing, washing and lodging, treat him with kindness and humanity, have him instructed in the occupation of farming, have him taught to read, write, and cypher as far as the Rule of Three, and at the expiration of his term of apprenticeship furnish him with two complete new suits of clothing.

This indenture made and entered into this 3rd day of February 1866 between William H. Thornton, Judge of the Probate court of said county, and his successors in office, of the first part and Benjamin Stewart of the same county of the second part. Witnesseth that the said Judge has this day put, placed, bound, and apprenticed Henry Stewart a colored boy aged about eight years of age, with him the said Benjamin Stewart dwell as an apprentice, until he the said Henry Stewart shall attain the full age of twenty-one according to the statute in such cases made and provided. Proof having been made to said Judge, that the said Henry's father is dead, his mother has four or more other children and is unable to provide a support for said Henry, And the said B. Stewart for his part for himself, his executors and administrators, consents and agrees that the said Henry shall be so bound and apprenticed to him, and that he for the use of said Henry will furnish a sufficiency of good and wholesome provisions, furnish all necessary clothing, washing and lodging, treat him with kindness and humanity, have him instructed in the occupation of farming, have him taught to Read, Write, and Cypher as far as the Rule of Three, and at the expiration of his term of apprenticeship furnish him with two complete new suits of clothing.

This indenture made and entered into this the (illeg) day of February 1866, between William H. Thornton, Judge of the Probate court of said county, and his successors in office, of the first part and John N. Wills of the same county of the second part. Witnesseth that the said Judge has this day put, placed, bound, and apprenticed William Wills a colored boy about Five years of age, with him the said John N. Wills to dwell as an apprentice until he the said William shall attain the full age of twenty one according to the statute in such cases made and provided. Proof having been made to said Judge that said William has no father, his mother is afflicted and unable to provide him a support and besides desires that he shall be bound to said Wills. And the said John N. Wills for his part, for himself, his executors and administrators, consents and agrees that the said William shall be so bound and apprenticed to him, and that he for the use of said William will furnish a sufficiency of good and wholesome provisions, furnish all necessary clothing, washing and lodging, treat him with kindness and humanity, have him instructed in the occupation of farming, have him taught to Read, Write, and Cypher as far as the Rule of Three, and at the expiration of his term of apprenticeship furnish him with two complete new suits of clothing.

This indenture made and entered into this the 2nd day of February 1866, between William H. Thornton, Judge of the Probate court of said county, and his successors in office, of the first part and John N. Wills of the same county of the second part. Witnesseth that the said Judge has this day put, placed, bound, and apprenticed a colored boy Copas Wills about Nine years of age, with him the said John N. Wills to dwell as an apprentice until he the said Copas shall attain the full age of twenty one years according to the statute in such cases made and provided. Proof having been made to said Judge, that said Copas has no father, his mother is in very bad health and entirely unable to support him, besides she desires that said Copas shall be bound and apprenticed to Said Wills. And the Said Wills for his part, for himself, his executors and administrators, consents and agrees that the said Copas shall be so bound to him, and that he for the use of said Copas will furnish a sufficiency of good and wholesome provisions, furnish all necessary clothing, washing and lodging, treat him with kindness and humanity, have him instructed in the occupation of farming, have him taught to Read, Write, and Cypher as far as the Rule of Three, and at the expiration of his term of apprenticeship furnish him with two complete new suits of clothing.

Witnesseth that the said Judge has this day put, placed, bound, and apprenticed Louisa Wills a colored girl about Seven years of age, with him the Said John N. Wills to dwell as an apprentice until she the said Louisa Wills shall attain the full age of _______ years according to the statute in such cases made and provided. Proof having been made to said Judge, that said Louisa has no father, her mother is badly afflicted in bad health entirely unable to provide a support for said Louisa, besides desires that she be bound and apprenticed to said John N. Wills. And the said John N. Wills for his part, for himself, his executors and administrators, consents and agrees that the said Louisa shall be so bound and apprenticed to him, and that he for the use of said Louisa will furnish a sufficiency of good and wholesome provisions, furnish all necessary clothing, washing and lodging, treat her with kindness and humanity, have her instructed in the occupation of cooking, washing, housework, outwork and have her taught to Read, Write, and Cypher as far as the Rule of Three, and at the expiration of her term of apprenticeship furnish her with two complete new suits of clothing.
