Julia A. Morris According to the 1880 census, Julia A. Morris was born (b. ca. 1832 in Georgia - dec. 1880 - 1900, Alabama). She is living with her son Harrison Morris (b. , ), daughter-in-law Linnet and granddaughter Julia Morris (b. 1871 - dec?). I found Harrison listed in the 1870 Talladega county census, with his wife Linnet. I also found a record for the marriage of Harrison MORRISS and Linnet BARCLAY on July 8, 1869 in Talladega county. I believe there is a strong circumstantial case that this Julia is the mother of my g-grandfather Albert, as follows:

Albert Morris ca. 1849 - 1916 Albert MORRIS was born ca. January, 1849 somewhere in Alabama. His father has been identified as James/Jim DUNCAN, but his mother (b. 1832 in Georgia) apparently lived on the MORRIS plantation and he adopted that surname after emancipation. I cannot find either Albert or Julia in either the 1866 colored census or the 1870 federal census. My first record of Albert is his marriage in 1871, to Ann CHANDLER (b. 1855 in Alabama). They were married April 2nd, 1871 at "the Mill of Mr. Hammond". They had a total of 11 children:

1874 In 1874 Albert Morris signed a note due December 1875 for $94.04 to James Headen in payment for a bay mare " in as much as the purchase of said mare will enable me [Albert] to make a crop the present year." 1888 On 28th day of August 1888, g-grandfather Albert completed the purchase of 67 acres of land from the heirs of Marcus M. Duncan (sr.) for $468.00. The description of this property matches that given in his widow Annie's application for exemption after his death in 1916. 1897 On the 9th day of December, 1897 Albert Morris completed the purchase of the "SW1/4 of the SE 1/4 or Sec. 2, T.19 Range 4, except a block of 4 acres in the south west corner --one acre extending to the Southern Rail Road on the south line. Also a triangular block of 5 acres more or less west of the Southern Railroad in the SE 1/4 SE 1/4 Sec. 2, T.19, Range 4." for $400.00 from the estate of Mrs. M.J. Miles. 1916 Albert Morris died on August 3, 1916 in his home. He did not leave a will. A few weeks later my g-grandmother Annie filed for her widow's exemption on 107 acres. The property described was the same purchased in 1888 and 1897. |

Columbus F. Morris |
My grandfather, Columbus Franklin MORRIS was born on July 24, 1897. He grew up on his father's farm in Alabama. He was the 10th child of Albert and Annie. As the youngest son his nickname was 'Son' in the family. He grew up and was educated in Talladega county but at the time this photograph was taken he was probably living in Anniston, Alabama with his brother Henry J. MORRIS who owned a grocery store there. In 1919 my grandfather Columbus F. Morris joined the U.S. Army. He served in the 10th Cavalry stationed at Fort Huachaca in Arizona, where I found him in the 1920 Federal Census. After his discharge he went to Los Angeles instead of Alabama. He worked as a cook at the Central hotel. On November 24, 1926 Columbus F. MORRIS married my grandmother Geneva J. (GOINGS) COOKSEY (b. 1897). This was a first marriage for my grandfather, the second for my grandmother. After the marriage they lived on 5118 Ascot in the rental development built by Emma and Jennie GOINGS. Later they moved to Monrovia to a large 2-story house on a 1/4 acre lot -- large enough for my grandmother's flowers and my grandfather's chickens. They had two daughters:

Mignon died tragically young of lymphosarcoma a few months before her 5th birthday. Grandpa later went to work for the Post Office, at first as a clerk. He later became a mailman, a job he held until his retirement in the early 1960's. In the late 1960's my grandparents moved to Altadena to be closer to their daughter and grandchildren. Columbus Morris died December 14, 1973. |
