THREE BURNSVILLE COUPLES CELEBRATE 50 Years of Marriage In June, 1948


On June 6, 1848 three Golden Wedding couples, all long-time residents of Burnsville, were honored by the community and St. John the Baptist Church, where they were married when it was located in Byrnesville. Mr. and Mrs. John Slater, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Kennelly, and Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Kennelly also had the honor if receiving the apostolic blessing of Pope Pius the XII, as follows: "Occasion, 50th anniversary, the Holy Father lovingly impart themselves and their families paternal apostolic blessings implored Pius XII--Vatican City"

John Slater and Bridget Walsh were married June 7, 1898 by Fr. Wm. Rhatigan, with George Slater and Julia Walsh as their attendants. During their marriage 7 children were born and at the time of their Golden Wedding they had 21 grandchildren and 2 great-grand children.

Walter Kennelly and Rose McCann, married May 25th , 1898, were attended by Margaret McCann Dempsey, Tom Kennelly, Margaret Leonard Smith and Jim Scott. They had six children and there were 17 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
