First Pohls in South Africa SA flag

The first children were born at Swellendam, South Africa. As the family trekked to the interior others were born on the farms "Klein Berge" on the Gourits river and "Zandkraal" , where the town of George is presently situated. Carl gradually became relatively prosperous and owned various commercial, building and farming concerns. During this period he also met and befriended various historical figures such as the Voortrekker leader, Piet Retief and the controversial George Rex. The family thereafter apparently also resided in the town of Uitenhage for a while, since their youngest children were baptised there and later on, during the time of the arrival of the British settlers they again trekked on still further north/east to settle on farms in the Grahamstown area.

Their eldest son, Carel Frederik (1802-1870), who in 1825 married Christiana Johanna Ferreira(1806-1869)during those years acquired a beautiful farm which is situated on the old Algoa Bay/Grahamstown route. The farm was later named "Carels Rust", because it was there that Carl found his last resting place. It was also from there that the Pohl descendants dispersed as time went on, eventually to settle in the wider interior of SOUTH AFRICA.
