My Shawn

************************************
Shawn & I at my best friend's wedding - 6/12/99
************************************

I met Shawn in the summer/fall of 1995 while we both were working at McDonald's. We have almost always been friendly but weren't like best buds or anything. We would talk and goof off at work here and there but that was about it. He ended up going to New Hampshire to stay with family for the summer of 1996 but was back later on that year. He called McDonald's a couple of times while he was gone to talk to old friends so I got to keep in touch with him. When he came back, things were the same...we talked and goofed around at work, but nothing special. Lucky for me... things changed.

In February 1997 I had to work the closing shift at work. Even though he wasn't supposed to be working that night - Shawn came in to help me out. After work, I was going to give him a ride home. I am honestly not sure what happened but we ended up driving around and talking the whole night. I noticed that he was very easy to talk to and wasn't the kind of person to judge. We talked about a lot of things that night.

That was the start of a wonderful friendship. The summer of 1997 was the best summer I've ever had. Shawn and I were the dynamic duo. We spent the whole summer together and he became one of my best friends. I was able to tell him anything. He is easy to talk to and, if I am upset, he will go out of his way to make me feel better. One night, I called him because I was very upset about something - crying and the whole nine yards - and we spent over 3 hours on the phone. He knew exactly what I needed to hear to make me feel better. I had to work the next day and he didn't but he went there just to give me a hug and make sure I was feeling better. He is a rare guy - he knows just what to say or do to make everything seem better.

Through that whole summer, everyone thought we were a couple. They were constantly asking us what the deal was. Of course we were wiseasses and would give them answers that didn't really answer anything at all but we enjoyed the confusion we were causing!! We were honestly just friends.

Again, lucky for me... things changed.

I guess everyone noticed something we didn't. What happened was that he and I were visiting my best friend, Maria, and were having a good time for ourselves. Maria gave me wine for whatever reason and I had a little too much. Maria thought we made a good couple and made a point of telling us this from the moment she first met Shawn and was telling us so that night. I decided I wanted to kiss him and did just that. Now I admit, I had a little crush on him for awhile before that but we were friends and I didn't want to affect that...so I never said anything until that night. He was a perfect gentleman, however, and took me home (kissed me goodnight!!), and brought my car back to me the next morning. But that first kiss made us think. We talked about it and we both admitted that we liked the other but hadn't said anything for fear of ruining a wonderful friendship. We decided to just take things slow and see where they went.

They led to something more wonderful than we could ever have imagined. We kissed again right before Christmas and everything snowballed from there. He is 100% the perfect man for me. He treats me better than I could have ever imagined - even better than I would say I deserve. I love him with my whole heart and it is the greatest feeling - being in love with your best friend.

And... it is now official... I get to spend the rest of my life with my perfect man. On July 7th, 1998, Shawn proposed to me!! He planned it as a birthday surprise but I was figuring it out and so he surprised me that day. He got down on one knee, said "Honey, you are the best thing that ever happened to me and I really love you a lot and want to spend the rest of my life with you... Will you marry me?", and gave me a gorgeous ring!! Quite obviously, I said yes!

Our wedding was held on September 9 of the year 2000!
