Matthew Littler & Alice Farrimond
My GR grandfather, Matthew LITTLER,
was born Oct 28 1879 in Haydock Lancashire,
when the family lived at 15 Kenyon's Lane.
He was the 8th of 11 children of Henry LITTLER & Elizabeth JACKSON,
who had married on Mar 2 1868 in the Billinge area of Lancashire.
My GR grandmother, Alice FARRIMOND,
was born Jan-Mar 1875 in Wigan Lancashire.
She was the daughter of Thomas FARRIMOND & Margaret HORAN,
who had married Jul 30 1871 in St Patrick's RC Church in Wigan.

Matthew and Alice had only 2 children :
1) Henry LITTLER born Jul 6 1901 in Haydock
when the family lived on Millfield Lane.
(Millfield Lane is part of Kenyon's Lane ~ they are merely separated by a bridge!)
He married Ada THOMASON on Mar 1 1924 in Michel BC Canada.
Ada was the daughter of Noah THOMASON & Mary HADDOCK.

2) Agnes LITTLER born between Jul-Sep 1902
She was nicknamed 'Sis' ...
There is support to the family-known and long-held belief by most,
that Agnes gave birth to a baby boy 'out of wedlock' abt 1920,
and was forced to give the baby up for adoption.
This baby was adopted by Margaret FARRIMOND & Thomas BAYBUTT.
Margaret FARRIMOND, known as Maggie,
was Alice's youngest sister !!

L to R: Matthew, Agnes, Alice & Henry (seated)
Matthew emigrated to Canada via the Maritimes,
and after residence in the Maritimes and the USA,
he and his family moved right across the country.
He and his family finally settled in Michel BC in 1907 where he worked as a miner.
He rose to the post of 'Pit Boss'.
In 1929, he left for Vancouver Island, working in mines there,
and abt 1934 he came to Crowsnest.

Matthew (Matt) Littler
After retiring from coal mining,
Matthew and Alice took over the running of the CPR Boarding House in Crowsnest BC
from Alice's sister Maggie Farrimond BAYBUTT and her husband.
Matthew and Alice ran things for a number of years
before calling upon their son, Henry and his wife Ada to take over from them.

Unfortunately for Henry & Ada,
Matthew and Alice stayed on
and still made virtually all major decisions on a regular basis :-(
I'm sure this unexpected turn of events didn't make for smooth sailing
as Ada loved singing in the church choir
and really missed
all the activities she and her family were involved with in their home in Kimberley.
Matthew died just before Christmas on Dec 20 1954 in Michel BC.
Alice lived for 5 more years, dying on Apr 19 1959,
in the hospital in Michel BC as well.
Both are buried in the old cemetary in Michel,
a town which no longer exists,
except in the memories of some still living.
