Notes for Joshua Richard GOODWIN

Joshua Goodwin grew up in Laurens County, SC. he married Sarah and in
the year 1834 a group of families decided to try their luck as pioneers.
These families formed a wagon train and set out westward for Jefferson
County, AL. Some of the came on a government bounty land grant and some
came because of the fertile land they had heard about. Most of these
families settled in the Mud Creek area or the Short Creek area. Both
areas are along the Warrior River. In 1850 Joshua owned real estate
valued at $200. In 1860 his real estate was valued at $400 and his
personal estate was valued at $300. In 1870 his real estate was valued
at $400 and his personal estate at $200. During the early 1860's the
south succeeded from the United Stated and the Civil War broke out.
Joshua's four sons volunteered for the Alabama Confederate Army. Two of
the boys lost their lives while defending the Confederates. Oliver Perry
Goodwin died in a hospital at Macon, Mississippi and John M. Goodwin died
in a hospital at Rome Georgia. Joshua served his enlistment defending
the coast at Ft. Morgan. During the summer of 1864 he was sent to Post
Hospital, for intestinal fever. While there the Fort was captured and
Joshua was a prisoner. He was sent to prison camp in Elmira, New York.
He was there until the war ended on June 6, 1865.
