Notes for Joel Elisha KING

Joel Elisha King, M.D., received a common school education and dbegan
study of medicine when only 15 years of age, with a physician by the name
of Bassett, of Rootstown, Portage, Ohio. After he he was grown he
bought land in Charlestown, Ohio. The land was heavily timbered; he
felled the timber himself and soon he had a farm opened. He was a member
of the M.E. chuirch. he sold his farm, joined the ministry, moved to
Illinois in 1838, lived in Salem, Marion county, traveled and preached
on a Mission Circuit; moved to Dewitt County, Illinois in 1840. here at
first he devotes his entire time to the ministry, but finally graduated
in medicine, located and began the practice of medicine to the exclusion
of the ministry in 1842. he lived on a farm which he owned, seven miles
west of Clinton, Illinois. he sold the farm in 1853 and moved to Clinton
where he engaged in the mercantile business. For a few years he seemed
to proper but the hard times of 1857 broke him up. In 1861 he enlisted
in Company E, 20th Regiment, Illinois Voluntary Infantry and was detailed
in the hospital regiment. In 1862 he was sick, could not cure himself
nor could he get relief from other surgrons that he came in contact
with. During this sickness he was not confined to his bed but had chrge
of the smallpox hospital near Louisville, Kentucky. he was discharged in
October 1862 and on arrival at home weighed only 89 pounds. He studied
homeopathic medicine with Dr. Hummell on Clinton, Illinois and became a
partner with Dr. Hummell on January 1, 1863. he moved to Fairfield, Iowa
in March 1865, engaging in the practice of medicine and soon built up a
fine practice. he was always a liberal donor to churches, sometimes
giving away $500 at a time. In 1883 his office burned and he lost all
his medical library, notes and accounts in the amount of $700-8000. he
was a republican in politics, a member of the M.E. church and a member of
the AF&AM. He was a strong temperance man.
