Notes for William ALLIS
[Famtree.ftw]
He came in 1630 with Winthrop's Fleet (per Allis). A Richard Allis
arrived from London at Boston on 16 Sep 1632, a passenger on the "Lyon,"
William Pierce, Master, which sailed 22 June . William held these
offices: Deacon, Justice of the Peace (in 1656, at least). He surveyed
these towns: Northfield, MA; Deerfield, MA (1673); and Sunderland, MA
(1674).
He was a Coronet in Major Pynchon's Hampshire Troop 1663 - 1672. In the
latter year, he was designated Lieutenant of "The Hampshire County
Calvary." In 1675 he was in charge of the Hatfield Garrison with 36 men
under his command. He was in the fight with Indians at "The Falls" above
Deerfield in which his son, William, Jr. was killed. His grandaughter,
Abigail, daughter of his son John, was captured and taken to Canada
during the "Hatfield Massacre" in which his wife Mary was killed.
He may have been descended from William Alis, who is found in the
Domesday Book at Ellatune (now Allington), County Hants. William Alis
may have been of Alisay (formerly Alis) near Paris. A Geoffrey Alis was
a Crusader in 1096 with Robert, Duke of Normandy. A Roger Alis was made
Sheriff of London in 1395.
