Australian Flag Info....
The Union Jack takes up a quarter of our flag. It is the flag of England and the United Kingdom and it reminds us that Australia is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, with Elizabeth II as our Queen.
The constellation of the Southern Cross is the symbol of our great "Southern Land".
The Federal Star (the seven pointed star under the Union Jack) represents the six States of Australia and the territories we look after.
The Greek names of the stars in the Southern Cross are:-
Alpha (bottom star)
Beta (star nearest Union Jack)
Gamma (top star)
Delta (star nearest edge of fly)
Epsilon (small five pointed star)
The Federal Star has seven points; and in the Southern Cross the four larger stars have seven points and are equal in size and the small star has five points. In each star one of the points is at the very top.
The edge of the flag nearest the pole is called the "hoist" and the opposite edge is called the "fly".
An upside down flag is the signal for distress.
