Pom-poms

Pom-poms make great baby toys; they're soft and fun. They can be made almost any size you like, I once made one 40cm in diameter! But, don't try making them any bigger than that, or it won't stay together. A glass-end size is good.

Materials needed

A piece of cardboard
wool (lots of colours!)
scissors
a glass

Using the glass as stencil, draw two equal circles on the cardboard and cut them out. Using a 5 cent coin (Australian; equivalent size to US one penny) draw a cirlce in the middles of each circle, and cut them out. Place both pieces together so that it looks like one piece. Now cut a piece of wool about 30cm long, and wind it around the cardboard, going through the hole each time. Keep winding until you can't fit any more wool through the hole. Now carefully cut the wool along the outer edge, keeping it all together. With another piece of wool, tie a knot in between the cardboard pieces, to hold the wool firmly in place. Remove the cardboard, and your pom-pom is complete!

You can make a rope to hold your pom-pom with, by using more wool. Cut numerous pieces 80cm long, and with the help of a friend twist the ends in opposite directions, keeping it taught. Hold the middle of the twited wool, and take both ends in your other hand; then let the wool twist itself into a rope. You should end up with a rope about 40cm long. Tie a knot in the end and then tie the folded end to the middle strring of your pom-pom.
