Backyard Rescue

by Hope Ryden

Backyard Rescue, by Hope Ryden, is a 1998-99 Hoosier Award Nominee for 4th through 6th grades.

Greta and Lindsay are the best of friends. They both love the outdoors and everything about wildlife. When they find a hurt screech owl, which they name Troll, they start a hospital for other hurt animals they find. They take Troll into school for Show and Tell and the news of their backyard hospital is out. One of the kids from school brings them a snake he thinks is hurt, but he has just mishandled the snake. Greta and Lindsay release it to its natural habitat. But when the kid finds out they have let his snake go, he reports them to the Fish and Game Warden. Ms. Ryden gives a lot of explanation about the different laws governing wildlife and how sometimes they can be against the best interests of the wildlife they are trying to protect.
