The Bat in the Boot
The Bat in the Boot is a 1998-1999 Hoosier Nominee for Kindergarten through Third Grade. It's not everyday that you find a bat in your house, but Will and Lilly find a baby bat in their mudroom. It runs for Dad's boot and they have trouble getting it into a shoe box. The family cat is very interested in their new visitor, but they keep the bat safe in the shoe box on top of the piano. It drinks milk from a napkin Mom twists, but its wings are too soft yet for it to fly soon. Will and Lilly take care of the baby bat like all children who find an injured or abandoned animal. Later that night the mother bat returns for her baby and with the help of Will and Lilly flies off with the baby bat in her mouth. ![]() This is a great book.
