The Bear That Heard Crying

by Natalie Kinsey-Warnock

The Bear That Heard Crying by Natalie Kinsey-Warnock is a 1997-98 Hoosier Nominee for Kindergarten through Third Grades.

The story of Sarah Whitcher is true and was discovered by the author's sister, Helen, when she was researching her family geneology.

It was a warm Sunday afternoon when Sarah's parents decided to go up the Summit of Pine Hill near Warren, New Hampshire, to visit Sarah's Uncle Chase, Aunt Hannah and their new little baby. Her parents had told Sarah she could not go, but as soon as they were out of sight, Sarah followed them up the hill. She soon became lost in the woods. When the sun started to set, she was hungry, tired and soon very cold.

When her parents returned home later that evening and learned that Sarah was not there, her father sounded the dinner horn to alert their neighbors. For three days, the Whitchers and their neighbors searched and searched for Sarah. The outcome of the story can only be told by the author in her book!
