Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson is not on any awards list that I know, but it should be on everyone's "have to read" list.

Jesse practices all summer long to be the fastest kid in 5th grade. Then Leslie Burke moves into a nearby farmhouse! Not only is she a girl, but she beats Jesse and every other 5th grader. Soon Jesse realizes that Leslie is the best friend he ever had and they become inseparable. They create "Terabithia," a land where they reign as King and Queen. Jesse can't imagine life without Leslie, but a tragedy occurs and they are separated forever.

This book was special to me, because I have a friend who is like a different "me," just like Jesse and Leslie. I think everyone (even adults) would really like this book, because it talks about how special a true friend really is.
