Caleb's Choice by G. Clifton Wisler is is a 1998-99 Hoosier
Award Nominee for Fourth through Sixth Grades.
In 1858, Caleb Dulaney's family loses all it has. He must travel
across Texas to live with his Grandmother until his father can work
things out. When living with his Grandmother, he learns about
runaway slaves and some people are actually helping them. Caleb
is in a position to help a runaway slave, Micah, who once helped him.
He has to weigh what he has learned from his family against what he
has learned since living with his Grandmother. Will Caleb help his
friend, Micah?
Rating:
This is a great book on an important historical topic. It teaches
that sometimes you have to take some risks to stand up for your friends
and for what you believe. It can be purchased through
