Down the Road

by Alice Schertle

Down the Road by Alice Schertle is a 1997-98 Hoosier Award Nominee for Kindergarten through Third Grades.

Behind Hetty's little house her father fixed other people's cars. In front of her house was a dusty road that ran through a field and then up over a hill. One day Hetty was allowed to go down that dusty road all by herself to buy eggs from Mr. Birdie. Hetty thought she was really grown-up getting to go down the road all by herself.

Hetty made it to town and bought the dozen eggs from Mr. Birdie, but on the way back the day Hetty spotted an apple tree with bright red apples. Hetty loved apples. Papa loved apples. Mama loved apples.

Rating: Five Stars

Kirsten loved this book! Dad says Hetty is any little girl or boy, who feels so grown up when asked to do something special, like walk down the dusty road alone. Sometime, even though we think we are grown up to make our own decisions, we don't see all the elements. This book is about "reactions to every action." It can be purchased on line through Amazon.
