Earthquake Terror

by Peg Kehret

Earthquake Terror by Peg Kehret is a 1998-99 Hoosier Award Nominee for Fourth through Sixth Grades.

Jonathan and Abby are on a camping trip on Magpie Island with their parents when their mother falls and sprains her ankle during a hike. Their father leaves Jonathan to take care of his disabled sister, Abby, while he takes their mother to a doctor on the mainland. After their parents leave, an earthquake strikes, destroying their camper and Abby's walker. Because the earthquake alters the course of the river, the island is starting to flood and the bridge connecting it to the mainland has been destroyed. Jonathan worries about his little sister, who doesn't have a walker, and whether his parents made it across before the bridge was destroyed.

Rating:

This book was educational and suspenseful. It is based on the earthquake that took place on October 17, 1989 when the World Series was being played in Oakland, California. Even though I have been in an earthquake, I was too little to remember it. Earthquake Terror gives you some idea of what it would be like to be in an earthquake.
