Just Call Me Stupid Just Call Me Stupid by Tom Birdseye is a 1997-98 Hoosier Award Nominee for Fourth through Sixth Grades. Patrick Lowe's father is an alcoholic and was really mean to Patrick. One time he locked Patrick in the closet, because he couldn't say the alphabet right. He told Patrick he was stupid and so Patrick thought he was stupid. It didn't help matters that he was in fifth grade and still couldn't read. Even though his mom was nice to Patrick, she pretty much ignored his education. Mrs. Romero, his teacher, tried to encourage him, but could never get him interested. He would have gone through life believing he was stupid if Celina hadn't moved next door to Patrick. Celina loved to read and she helped him to believe in himself and that he could read. I would highly recommended this book to all kids. It teaches that no matter what, you can do and be anything you want to do and be. It's easier if your parents are there to help you. If not, there is always someone (a friend, teacher, a counselor or a principal), who can make a difference in your life. Purchase Just Call Me Stupid through Amazon's. If you can't afford to buy the book, please get yourself a library card and visit the public library weekly!
