Sticks

by Joan Bauer

Sticks is a 1998-1999 Hoosier Nominee for Fourth through Sixth Grade.

This is a great story that teaches good values in life. Mickey Vernon wants nothing more than to win the Vernon's Pool Hall Championship t-shirt in the 10-13 year old pool tournament. Arlen, his best friend and personal mathamatician, is his only hope to beat Buck Pender, the 13 year old pool whiz. Then Joseph Alvarez, a friend of his father, comes to town and coaches Mickey to improve his pool game. Mickey's mother doesn't trust Joseph. Mickey learns that you win a pool game one shot at a time. We can learn that anything we want to accomplish can be done one step at a time.
