Sunflower House

book
by Eve Bunting

Sunflower House is a 1997-1998 Hoosier Nominee for Kindergarten through Third Grade.

The cycle of plants from seeds to plants to seeds is explained in this story. Instead of planting the sunflower seeds in a row like the package says, Dad suggests planting the seeds in a circle. Soon the sunflower plants break through the soil and begin to grow tall. Finally they are taller than everyone! The tall circle is just the right fit for children - adults don't fit! All summer long it becomes a house, a fort, a castle and a cage until one day the stems begin to bend toward the ground. There isn't anything that can be done until the children discover the seeds. . . the seeds that will become next summer's house . . . .
