Wind Wagon
by Celia Barker Lottridge

Wind Wagon by Celia Barker Lottridge is a 1997-98 Hoosier Award Nominee for 4th through 6th Grades.

The book takes place in the 1860s. Sam Peppard is a blacksmith in Oskaloosa, Kansas who decides to build a "wind" wagon, which is basically like a sail boat except that it travels across land instead water. The townspeople, of course, laughed at him. With a friend and the 13 year old Graham twins, he sets out for Denver, Colorado in his wind wagon. His travel adventures in his prairie schooner are the main part of the story.

Rating:

The book was easy reading, but it wasn't that exciting. It does show that no matter what people say, you need to follow your dream and not be afraid to fail. The publisher is out of stock, but you can keep checking Amazon!
