Winter's Coming

by Eve Bunting

This is a story of fall and how all of nature prepares for the coming winter. Dad says it is going to be a long hard winter because the caterpillars are furrier this year . . . . Grandpa says there'll be lots of snow because he's never seen the leaves as scarlet and gold . . . . Grandma says it will be cold this winter because she saw four black crows on a hickory limb which only means there will be four white snows . . . . Mother is busy canning the fall harvest so there's plenty to eat during the winter.

This is a great book for beginning readers who are just learning to sound out words using phonics. Learning the signs of winter is also interesting to new students and Ms. Bunting uses animal patterns to show the changes in nature.

Rating: 4 stars!

It is too bad that this book is no longer being released from the publisher because it does two things at once. It is a long book that new readers can read and see that they can read "big" books and it also tells a little about weather patterns and signs of winter.
