1. Joshua Mercereau, Gen. #23803 born Abt. 1600. The surname Mercereau is of ancient French origin. There is a tradition, doubtless true, of the earlier history of this family, who were Huguenot refugees from Saintonge, near Rochelle, France about 1685-88. After the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685 and the persecution of the Huguenots following, there was a general exodus of the French Protestants. Secretly and by night, often in strange disguises, fraught with great suffering and beset by dangers on every side, they fled in great numbers to Switzerland, Germany and England, and not a few made their way to America. The original manuscript now in possession of one of the family, has been published in "Magazine of Daughters of Revolution," April 1892, Clute's "History of Staten Island," and Wilkinson's "Annals of Binghamton." The original French family spelled the name Mercereau (with c), and some branches use "C" now. For the sake of indexing, all the name if possible have been spelled, "Mercereau."

Marie died 1733, Freas Kills, Staten Island, New York. Sources on this person varies, some state her name was "Marie", others state "Mary." One source states that Mary married John La Tourette, and was at Schenectady, New York, at the time of the massacre of 1690; also stating that her husband and children were slain and she was scalped and left for dead, but recovered and spent the rest of her life in the home of her elder brother Joshua, on Staten Island, wearing a cap to conceal the nakedness of of her skull. If we are to believe the account of the massacre in Schenectady then we most also guestion other sources that state her husband, John La Tourette did not die until 1742 and that Mary or Marie gave birth to a son "Jean La Tourette" in 1695, which would have been impossible if we assume her husband died in 1690. We must also guestion the fact that Mary and John La Tourette were said to have married July 16, 1693 in France, but in all accounts it states that John La Tourette and his wife, Marie came to America with Marie's family in 1685. Readers at this point are allowed to make their own assumuptions or to research this line further for themselves. Joshua died 10-Jun-1804, Union, Broome Co., New York. Joshua was educated at what is now Columbia College, and practiced law in New York City. He was a member of Provincial Assembly of New York State, which met at Kingston and Poughkeepsie during the years 1777 to 1786 of the Revolution, being Representative for Richmond County. He was also Deputy Commissary of Prisoners (Gen. Elias Boudinot being his superior officer), with headquarters at Rutland (near Boston), Mass., and again at Elizabethtown New Jersey. He and his brother, John ran the first line of stage coaches between New York and Philadelphia. Joshua assisted in raising a company for the Quebec expedition in the autumn of 1775. His services were continuous in various capacities during the entire war, proven by numerous manuscript records. One of these letters speaks of the Bristish headquarters proclaiming Joshua Mercereau a "Rebel" and set a price of five hundred guineas on his head, dead or alive, threatening to hang him on Staten Island, also his brother Cornelius, when he went to arrange an exchange of prisoners. In another letter he sends his regards to General and Mrs. Boudinot, and through them to His Excellency General Washington; also sends confidential communication to Hancock and Adams; speaks of General Howe; of General Burgoyne's surrender, etc., etc. His name appears on Staten Island records of transfers of land from 1762 to 1789; and then, as other soldiers, he secured grants of land in the western part of the State, as mentioned in New York State Records. After the war he removed with his family to Tioga County, where he was one of the earliest Judges. For further particulars of his life, also correspondence, the reader is referred to the "Magazine of Daughters of the Revolution," whose editor is a lineal descendant. He was instrumental in saving the retreat of General Washington's army after crossing the Delaware River, by discovering a sunken boat and destroying it. He and his brother, Joshua ran the first line of stage coaches between New York and Philadelphia. John introduced the first postcoach into the country from England. When the revolution broke out the stages belonging to the brothers were stopped and the horses turned over to the American service for the army. After the war he removed with his family and his brother, Joshua's family and many others, to the wilderness on the banks of Susquehanna River, and founded the village of Union, New York. On September 25, 1804, he wrote a letter, condoling upon the recent death of their brother, Jacob.Children by Maria Prall:

While but a youth, he was engaged with his father, Deputy Commissary Joshua Mercereau, at Rutland, Massachusetts, and later accompanied Lord Stirling's expedition against Fort Richmond. He was a prisoner in 1783 on the British Ship, "Scorpion," in New York bay. After the war he married Dinah Garrison of Staten Island, and moved with his father's family to the Susquehanna valley, near Unadilla, N.Y. He was engaged in the lumbering business until late in life. His wife died October 19, 1822. They had thirteen children. OBITUARY- From the Wellsboro Agitator January 29, 1857- Another Revolutionary Patriot Gone- Died on the 20th of January, 1857 at the residence of his son, James G. Mersereau in Tioga, Tioga County Pa., Joshua Mersereau aged 97 years, 7 months, 2 days. Born on the North side of Staten Island, resided a long time at Gulford, Chenango County, N.Y. and later near Erwin Center, Steuben county, New York. His father Joshua, himself and his brother John L. (late of Covington, Tioga County, Pa.) were devoted and active Patriots in our Revolutionary struggle. He was descended from Huguenot ancestors who were driven from France by the bloody persecutions which ensued on the revocation of the Edict of Mamtes; & he exhibited in no small degree the virtues justly attributed to the Huguenot character. He was a leading Whig and Republican, was twice elected to the state assembly, and to him belongs the greater credit for the extension of the Genesee Valley canal from Olean to Portville. He was a member of the Presbyterian church. He married first Julia Redfield, the mother of his four children. The Mansfield Advertiser Newspaper dated September 14, 1887 states: John G. Mersereau died in New York City last Wednesday and was buried in Tioga on Saturday at the age of 8_, He was an early setter of Tioga, Pennsylvania. I believe it is referring to this John G. In 1849 he located in Portville, New York, and engaged in lumbering with his father until his premature death in 1857. He served in various public offices, among them supervisor. He married Esther, daugtherof Daniel Butts of Rome New York who died April 18, 1855, aged thirty-one years, a descendant of Governor William Bradford, of the "Mayflower."

According to the family, Frank's wife, Mary never liked the idea that her husband was being buried up on the hill in Westfield, Pa. She always said she felt that her husband was being, "hauled off to the snakes." This apparently because their was suppose to have been rattlesnakes on the cemetery grounds. After much time had passed, in about the year 1930, Mary arranged with Ellis Williamson from Sabinsville, a grocery store owner that did odd jobs when necessary, to move her husbands remains to Fairview Cemetery in Osceola, Pa. Ellis Williamson, dug up the remains and moved him to Fairview, placing him next to other relatives. Before her death in 1943, Mary decided she wanted to be buried in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Westfield next to her great-grand daughter Donna Johnson. Apparently, Mary's daughter, Emma, told Mary that since she had gone to all the trouble of moving her husband to Fairview Cemetery in Osceola that contrary to Mary's wishes, she too would be buried in Osceola with her husband.Children:

I believe Dad was most happy working on his old wooden Chris-craft in the late 30's and early 40's. He also enjoyed deer hunting and in his later years, his workshop--which he built in his backyard." Joyce: Joyce was 5 foot 2 inches tall and weighted over 300 pounds. She liked sewing, embroidery and crocheting. From a newspaper article dated September 9, 1940- "Mrs. Joyce N. Johnson has returned to her home at Troupsburg from St. James in Hornell after a four week stay there. Her condition is somewhat improved." Also in the same newspaper a report was written on the family reunion being held at Squab Hollow. Apparently, Joyce (Kimball) Johnson wanted a reunion and because of health reasons was unable to. Her daugher, Ruth (Johnson) Sawyer told her to hold the reunion at her home at Squab Hollow, which she did. The article reads, "FAMILY REUNION HELD AT SQUAB HOLLOW HOME" "The seventh annual reunion of the Tremaine family was held Labor Day at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jennings Sawyer of Squab Hollow with 44 present. A dinner was served on the lawn. A business meeting was called to order by President S.E. Tremaine and the following were elected to serve for next year; President, S.E. Tremaine; Vice-President, Wayne Bell; Treasurer, Charles Edgecomb; Secretary, Emma Johnson. It was voted to hold the next reunion Labor Day, 1941 in Grove Park, Elmira, NY, as guests of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Edgecomb. Relatives were present from Athens, Elmira, Tioga Center, Rochester, Jemison Valley, Westfield and Sabinsville." RUTH graduated from the Sabinsville School (11th grade) in June 1930; She then graduated from the Westfield High School in June 1931, and then attended and graduated from the Meekers (Elmira) Business Institute in June 1932. After graduation she could not find a business job so she went to work for the Eclipes plant in Elmira until 1933 when she became ill and her mother asked her to return home to Westfield, PA. She met and married Jiggs the next year. Ruth raised a large family and worked outside the home at the same time. She was elected Troupsburg Tax Collector and served in that capacity for over 20 years. She was also the telephone operator for a few years. She lost that job when the new dial phone system was installed about 1965. Jennings: Jiggs parents moved to Troupsburg when he was young. He met Ruth when he and a friend were going to the movies in June 1934. One day they went for a ride and stopped in Troupsburg, NY and bought a marriage license. Then they drove over to Woodhull, NY where they were married. They were hesitant about telling their parents they were married so Jiggs took Ruth home and they spent their wedding night apart in their separate homes. They told their parents the next day and Jiggs took Ruth home with him the next night and they lived with Jiggs parents for a few months before they rented a house down the road a mile or so. Both Ruth & Jiggs worked for the Trowbridge Saw Mill in Sabinsville for a time after they married. They bought a house on Squab Hollow Road in Troupsburg, N.Y. on May 27, 1937 for the sum of $700.00. As it did not have any indoor plumbing, Jiggs built an addition on the back of the house that included a bedroom, a bathroom and a large back porch. His father, Jesse Sawyer helped with the construction of the addition. A new well was also drilled because before this Ruth had to carry water from the Ralph Eddy farm, which was up the road about a quarter mile. In January 1965 Jiggs and Ruth moved uptown to Troupsburg and Jiggs remodeled the whole house or practically all of it. He gutted the whole second floor and half of the first floor. Lawrence Thomas, a carpenter, helped Jiggs rebuild the stairway to the second floor and down to the cellar, but Jiggs did most of rest of the work himself. He then proceeded to build two large bedrooms along with a hallway, stairway room on the second floor and enlarged the livingroom to about double its previous size. They lived in this house for 53 years and most of their children were born there. Jiggs worked for the Elkland Tannery for almost 40 years before the Tannery closed. Jiggs became ill with lung cancer and had an operation where they removed most of one of his lungs and part of the other. He died of Lung cancer in May 1975. Jiggs enjoyed woodworking, and he had a coin and a stamp collection. Jiggs stood 5'10" tall and weighted about 220 lbs.. While working at the Tannery he was a night watchman, chauffeur, grounds keeper and stockroom worker.
