"Dr. C.L. Souder, of Columbia City, died Friday evening at the Lutheran
Hospital in Fort Wayne, after a weeks illness. Towards the last, the
disease from which he was suffering, destroyed his mind and he was
unconscious of what was going on around him. The Doctor had been working
hard for 2 weeks, caring for his patients who were suffering from the
epidemic, and becoming exhausted he fell a victim to the disease. The
sinus trouble from which he had suffered for a few years returned,
for
which an operation was performed at the hospital. Following the
operation, brain and spinal trouble developed which caused the
physicians to realize that he was fatally ill. Dr. Souder was born
in
Larwill, August 18, 1874, and was the son of Dr. Christopher
Souder,
for many years the leading physician at Larwilll, and inheriting a
liking for medicine he early in life decided to make that his
profession. He graduated from the Northwestern University of Chicago
in
1898, and soon after began practicing in Columbia City, and became
one
of the busiest physicians in that city. He was married in 1900 to Miss
Lura Shinneman, of Columbia City, who survives him. He also leaves
l
sister, Mrs. B.F. Stewart, of Toronto, Canada, who survives him. He
had
2 brothers, but neither one of them have been heard from for several
years. Dr. Souder volunteered for service in the Army in 1917, and
while
at Camp Grant suffered a severe attack of pneumonia, and came
home to
recuperate, and was later honorably discharged. Following his death
a
post mortem was held and the upper portion of the skull was removed
and
a microscopic examination was made of the brain, disclosing the presence
of minngitis germs. The funeral was held Monday afternoon at the home.
