Wedding Dress

I don't remember why I crocheted my wedding dress. I know I made the decision pretty quickly. Michael gave me an engagement ring for Christmas in 1978. I had this book I'd just bought on a bargain table of crochet patterns, and there was this wedding dress pattern in it. I found a yarn shop in Tampa and ordered this lovely beige cotton yarn from Belgium. The pattern was a bit difficult to decipher, but I managed. By June I had the dress finished. Then I decided I wanted lace. I talked a cousin, Marie Forbes, into teaching me how to tat. She was left-handed and I was right-handed. We shouted at each other a lot, but I finally got it figured out. Marie and a friend of hers, Alice Hermann each made some of the lace for me since I was incredibly slow at tatting. We got the needed 5 yards finished in time, and I fastened the veil material to a square crocheted in the same pattern as the skirt and sleeves of the dress. Here are pics we took before we left my parents' house for the wedding, and some from the church.

The bridesmaids were Cindy Grissom, Laura Leigh Lovell and Stacey Shackelford. Cindy & Laura Leigh were friends from High school, Stacey is my cousin. We made their dresses too. I picked out the pattern and material and sent the green fabric to my aunt in Texas, and the yellow fabric to Cindy in Missoula. I made Laura Leigh's dress in Florida, and made the underdress for mine from the same pattern. They all looked great!
