Miscellaneous Notes

Little is known about George Washington Osborn. His place of birth is listed as Missouri on Georgean's obit but states as Tennessee on 1870-1880 census'. Known to have two brothers (names unknown) whom the family lost track of during the Civil War.

George first shows up with Sibey on the 1870 McNairy County, Tennessee census with John H. Wharton and his family. It appears that he married Sibey in August of 1869. He then shows up in the 1880 Boone County, Arkansas census with children up to Viola.

At some time between 1870 and 1880 he moved his family to Joplin, Missouri where Georgean was born. George was credited for opening the first saddle shop in Joplin, Missouri. By trade he was a saddler, as listed in the census of 1870. He was also listed as handicapped on the 1880 census and it was shared with me by another genealogist that this handicap (one leg was shorter than the other) kept him out of the war.

The last known residence of George W. Osborn was in Wise County, Texas where he is buried. Sometime after his death, Sibey moved her children to Greer County, Oklahoma where her mother was still living.
