Steal This Website
The purpose is simple: it's really
just a copyright notice for Ritesh's Mehfil...what you, the reader,
can and can't do with all the neat stuff found on this website. The
concept is pretty straightforward: you have the right to take text,
graphics, code, navigation schemes, frame tricks, and most anything
else you can find on this site (which i will collectively refer to as
"Mehfil products"). The only thing I ask for in return is that
you include a link back to Ritesh's Mehfil (http://rkapur.cjb.net)
on whichever page you use an Mehfil product. You can even pass
the Mehfil product off as your own, modify it, what have you,
as long as a link back to Mehfil is somewhere on the page.
Ques.What about the © in Ritesh's Mehfil ?
Ans *wink* .. that should
be the least of your worry . Nothing is actually copyrighted . Since
it's so simple to make the © sign in HTML , i've used it so liberally
in my site . Another thing , it gives this professional appeal to
the site ;)

Ques. Why the Hell am I Doing This?
Ans There are a couple of different reasons I'm doing this:
a) It's an experiment in self-promotion, branding, and advertising.
By giving away my content in exchange for links, I'm trying to spread
'Mehfil' all over the place. 'Mehfil' graphics, 'Mehfil'
code, 'Mehfil' navigation, all over the world, all linked back
to the mother site. Ha ha ha ha .. evil world domination laughter. Of
course, it's probably not going to work (for a variety of reasons, not
the least of which is that no one is going to want anything from Mehfil),
but then noone ever stopped me earlier when I was making a fool of myself
...
b) It's a very thin line as to where one person's work stops
and where the next person's begins. Everyone borrows from everyone else.
I myself have borrowed techniques, looks, code, and the like from other
sites . By giving away my(?) website freely, I want to see what happens
when the fair use line is moved. How will people react? Will I be questioned
as to the validity of my own work when people see it used on other sites...saying
perhaps that I stole it? Will people question me for giving away all
my(?) hard work? Will anyone care?
My take on the whole thing is what makes Mehfil mine are the
ideas. You can have everything else, but the ideas remain mine. The
work alone is useless, even if you take all of it. An example:
:: You're a comedian. You tell me a joke. It's a funny joke, so I tell
it to a friend. My friend laughs, tells me I'm a funny guy, and asks
me to make her laugh some more. But, I only have the one joke so I can't.
You, on the other hand, you've got tons of jokes...not to mention the
talent to think up more jokes as you go along. You can make her laugh
all you want. You're a valuable commodity; I'm just a hack with one
joke.
So, you can have all my jokes...and I'll worry about my ability to come
up with new (and better) ones, rather than worry about what has become
of my old material.
Take it . It's yours .
