In
the early Dorchester
Massachusetts Church records
are references to Henry
Leadbetter. He was
intensely loyal to his country;
born in Hinkley England January
30, 1633/34 and is believed to
have come to the Colonies as a
young man. He was listed as a
freeman, May 31,1671. He took
an active part and was an
officer in King Phillips War in
1675, no sooner finishing the
term for which he had enlisted
than enlisting again. He
appeared before the Hon. John
Leverett the Provincial
Governor, and on Nov 11,1678
took his oath of allegiance. It
is recorded in the old church
records in Dorchester that on
Jan 15, 1659 he married Sarah
Tolman of Dorchester,
who was born in England in
1636, and came to this country
in "The Mary &
John" in 1630.
They
had eight children, Sarah,
Katherine, Henry,
Deliverance, Ruth
Increase, Ebenezer, and Israel.
Sarah died April 20,
1722. In the year
1691, he married second, Relief
Foster Holland,
daughter of John Holland one of
the first settlers of
Charlestown. She died in
1743 and is buried in the old
Dorchester burying ground near
Wiswell`s.
