ARTICLES OF MARRIAGE BETWEEN JON COWLEY AND CATHERINE MCYLECARANE 1715: Articles of Marriage agreed and concluded upon, by and betwixt William Cowley and his wife Anne in the behalf of the son Jon Cowley on the one part and Margaret Kindred als Mcylecarane in the behalf of her daughter Catherine on the other part as followeth: First, It is agree upon that ye coupld Jon Cowley and Catherine McYlecarane shall enter into ye Holy Estate of Matrimony at or soon after the 20th of this month. Secondly, the above William Cowley and his wife Anne do hereby oblige themselves to settle upon ye young couple half of all their lands, whatsoever against May next in present possession and ye other half after the death of ye longer liver of ye foresaid William Cowley or his wife, and to pass on heirship for ye future; and ye young couple in consideration of ye above and also their getting of half of ye husbandry gears viz of ye plow, harrows and half ye tables and said whole of these after their decease and to give to aforesaid William Cowley ----against May next and forty shillings more at the said of ----after if demanded. Thirdly, the above Margaret Kindred doth bind herself to give to and with her said daughter in portion three pounds and ten shillings besides what is due to her by ye death of her father. Fourthly, the said William doth oblige himself to give and settle upon said young couple half ye crop of corn and also half a herd of goates---it comes to ye----ye belong to his son Thomas, and whoever of ye two fix. William his son John over lives ye other ye have --- to be after his own--- Now that ye above William reserveth for himself ye benefit of I .4----taking of ye----during his natural life and after his decease to return to ye young couple and their heirs, and in case any part of ye be under form ye young couple one to ----half of ye said ----. ITEM: He declared to be due to him from Willi Kelley of Jurby one pound eleven shilling and five pence from John Briew twenty shillings and due from William Mylecharan forty shillings and from John Kermod five ITEM: He declared that whatever goods his said children had gotten by their father or mother they were to enjoy the same beside the named legacy bequeathed to them. ITEM: He left to the Revd Mr Woods a mutton. ITEM: He left that William Cowley and William Kelley should be supervisors of his said children allowing them one shilling piece. LASTLY: He nominated and appointed his son William sole executor of the rest of his goods whatsoever ITEM: He left to his wife his quarter of the crop of corn and the said quarter to return to his son William or whatsoever will be heir back again when shee leave the said farm and this in the present of us whose names are here written - March 10th 1732 John Cowley his mark X The executor at lawful years sworn in court in form of law who together with the mother are sworn overseers of the children under age. The goods of the children in the hands of the executors who has given pledges Wm Cowley of Crammag and Thomas Cowley of Ballaugh. Edmond Kneal and Ann Kneal also Cowley came this day~to the registry and have acknowledged the receipt of the legacy ]eft her by her father John Cowley being her part of the mortgage in the letter from the hands of her brother Wm Cowley the executor and declare they acquit him the said Wm Cowley forever for the sarne before me--Maths Curghey ArchReg Balnomooney in Ballaugh -- Nov 28th 1726-- John Cowley acknowledges, that to put an end to all manner of strife and debate, betwixt him and his brother Henry touching the goods and due to the said Henry by the death of his mother. He the said John obliges himself besides the sheep that Henry has already marked to give him all his part of the sheep in Glion-ny-muck vizt those that belonged to his father. He is also to pay Henry 10 shillings within 3 years(of which his sister Eliz McNameer promises to pay --- and Henry is also to have by 6 Sep of the flock that belonged to his father in Glion Attin, and is to be excluded from all right in the fold=sheep. And by this agreement an differences are to be at an end touching the last wills of the said partys father and mother and they bind themselves their executors and administrators to abide by and be satisfied with what is hereby concluded on, sub pena --- in nature of all fines. Sheweth: That your petitioner's father John Cowley Senior of Crammag aforesaid lately deceased. Sometime previous to his decease made his will and appointed your petitioner sole and whole executor of his said will. That the goods and effects of the deceadent requires the most immediate care which care your petitioner is well advised he can not legally proceed to - until the said wil] is perfected in law. Your petitioner therefore humbly pray your Reverences would be pleased to order this cause to come on to be heard before your Reverences with all convenient speed. That the said will may be proved and perfected in law. And your petitioner sworn in form of law as executor of the said will to proceed to the care and disposition of the said deceadents personal estate And your petitioner shall pray. He left an bequeathed unto his son Wm Cowley fifteen pounds together with an day moth of the hay or meadow land in the south west side and comer of Rush Close as the same is already marked and in case his aforesaid son John Cowley shall pay his brother the before mentioned fifteen pounds within the space of three years that then and in that case he the said John Cowley is wholly to enjoy the first day moth. He left and bequeathed unto his son Philip Cowley all the sheep belonging unto him in Glandish Baon and in Gland no Yhoan. He left also to his son Philip all his shapened and unshapened clothes vizt wbolen and linnen cloths. He left and bequeathed to his loving wife Alice Cowley the bed, bed cloathes and bed stead whereon she now lay in case she shall live after me and in case she my said wife shall die before me that then and in that case this article mentioned in this will is to be null and void and of none effect and in case the said John Cowley the testator doth at my time hereof give any settlement or dowry to my one of my aforesaid children that then and in that case he him or she is to be excluded of the legacy left them in this his last will and testament. He left and bequeathed that his executor hereafter is not to sue or prosecute any or either of his brothers and sisters my goods given them by the testator and his wife Alice. She was listed in her aunt Issable McYlecarane Corlett's 1765 will Film #0106224 #94 leaving her--- pounds three firlets of meal corn, two canvases and hemp as would be a couples of sacks or all her share. The hemp in the house and also a cow ofthe--- of the place - a house room and garden in Close E Kewnney if she remained unmarried during her natural life and after her decease the house room and garden would go to her aunt Issable's son John Cowley.
