This is declared to be the last will and testament of John Cowley of Crammag in the parish of Lezayre, 

being of sound mind and memory at the making hereof.

First - I commit my soul to God and my body to a Christian burial. Secondly - I leave to my sons, namely 

John, Thomas, William, and Philip one pound each as legacy.

Thirdly - I leave to my daughters Jane (widow of John Cowley deceased) and Ann, wife of 

Thomas Kelly, one pound each as legacy. Fourthly - I leave to my son Robert the sum of two hundred pounds 

which I have lent him and secured on the estate of Cleanagh in the parish of Lezayre as legacy.

Lastly I nominated, constitute and appoint my son John whole and sole executor of this my will and 

I leave to him all the residue and remainder of my personal property of what kind or nature soever.

Witness whereof I hereunto subscribe my name as and for my last will and testtment this 24th day of

Jane Cowley, widow, defendant. In Consistory Court of Isle of Man exhibited to Thomas Cowley,

 John Corlen and John Quayle, witnesses, produced sworn and examined on the part of the petitioner 

and referred to in their depositions taken this day before me, Joseph Brown. Depositions of witnesses 

were taken - Thomas Cowley of Ballaskella in the parish of Lezayre yeoman testified he had looked over 

the will and that John Cowley dilly signed and executed same in the presence of the witnesses and that 

John Cowley was of sound and disposing memory and understanding.

John Corlett of the Kella in the parish of Lezayre testified the same as Thomas Cowley. On cross examination 

he said he had never seen the decedent but when he was not of a particularly strong and sound state of mind 

and he was a man of sound discriminating judgement. John Quayle of the Craigmoar in the parish of Lezayre 

testified the same as Thomas Cowley and John Corlett.

It had been suggested to John Cowley, after the death of one of the witnesses and another had gone to 

Australia, that he execute a new will in presence of two or three other witnesses, and the defendant 

said "No, his mind was not changed in any way and he saw no reason for altering his will". Decedent 

looked at will on said occasion and said his eyes were failing him and handed said will to John Corlett, the 

witness, to read it, and he read every word of said will to decedent. He declared the decedent was fit on the 

day he executed the ratification and confirmation of said will.

At a Consistorial Court holden at Kirk Michael on the 28th day of November 1850: In the pursuance of the

 Judgement of this Court, dated the 31st day of October last, John Cowley, the executor of the last will and 

testament of John Cowley, late of Crammag, in the parish of Lezayre, deceased, is sworn well and truly to fulfill 

and execute the said will according to Law, to pay all just debts, legacies and funeral expenses of said testator 

so far forth as the goods and effects will extend and the law bind him, to return unto the Episcopal Registry a full, 

true, and perfect inventory of said goods, and effects with an accurate account of his administration thereof, and 

to these ends he hath given pledges, namely William Quayle and Thomas Cowley, who have executed a bond to 

that effect bearing equal date herewith.

21 January 1854. Jane Cowley claims 100 pounds sterling with interest.

Philip Cowley, a legatee, named in the foregoing will of John Cowley,

deceased, personally appeared at the Episcopal Registry and acknowledged that he had received and 

been paid the legacy of one pound bequeathed him by said will and he the said Philip Cowley hereby 

acquitted and discharge the executor John Cowley his heirs and executors of the said Legacy and of every 

part thereof. Dated 23 Oct 1851

John Cowley of Crammag, Lezayre, Episcoal Will 1850 #50 that on the 23rd day of July 1850 John Cowley 

of Crammag, your petitioner's father departed this life having first duly made and published his last will and 

testament and thereof appointed your petitioner executor. That it is expedient that the said will should 

be received and probate granted thereon and your petitioner sworn executor thereof

At an Ecclesiastical Court holden in Ramsey 3 August 1850. Upon hearing the petition after due notice 

to all the parties and Jane Cowley, widow, having opposed the proof of the will of John Cowley, deceased, 

on motion of her advocate (The other parties having declined any opposition) it is ordered that the evidence 

of such witnesses as may be required be taken before his Rev. Roger.

At a Consistorial Court held in Kirk Michael 31 Oct 1850, John Cowley will was proved and granted 

executorship to John Cowley and the court ordered that the defendant Jane Cowley be ordered 

to pay the cost of the suit.

At an Ecclesiastical Court held in Ramsey the 28th of March 1845. Upon hearing this petition in presence 

of the parties and their Advocates, it appears that Margaret Cowley of Lezayre departed this life sometime 

ago intestate, leaving John Cowley, her husband, her survivor besides John Cowley, Jr., Thomas Cowley, 

Anne Kelly, wife of Thomas Kelly, Robert Cowley, William Cowley, Jane Cowley, Philip Cowley, her

children, and next of kin, all of whom are thereupon decreed joint administrators of all and singular the 

goods, rights and credits, chattels and effects of the said deceased. John Corlett of the Kelle, being 

recommended to this Court as a fit and proper person to administer to the personal estate of the said 

deceased in trust for her said husband and next of kin is sworn in trust for her said husband and next of 

kin is sworn in trust, well and truly to administer the said estate, to pay all just debts and funeral

 expenses of the said deceased so far forth as the goods will extend and the law bind and to return to 

the Registry a true and perfect inventory of the estate, with an accurate account of all his acts and proceedings.

A further account of the proceeds of the Estate of Margaret Cowley, late of Crammag in the Parish of 

Lezayre to be appended to the accounts already returned to the Episcopal Registry.

Sale of Bond and Security on the property of Philip Cowley of Lezayre and in the accounts returned as 

with their recoverable, being sold by auction and brought by William Cowley for 51 pounds-0-0 Expenses 

attending the sale 15 pounds-O-O.

Interest having arisen on a section on Narradal, the property of Thomas Cowley from the date of Deed 

in January 7 up to the month of May, when the principal was paid, the said interest not having been paid by 

Thomas Cowley, who was one of the children of the deceased 12 pounds-0-0. Inventory not included.

of the parish of Lezayre. That your petitioners mother Jane Cowley of the Cleanagh in the said parish of 

Lezayre a few days ago departed this life intestate. That it is necessary that administration of estate and 

effects should be granted to some fit and proper person.

Wherefore petitioner humbly prays a hearing hereof and that your Worship may be pleased to grant 

administration of the estate and effects of the said Jane Cowley to some fit and proper person. And Petitioner 

will pray. Richard Sherwood

Ordered that the petition do come on to be heard at Ecclesiastical Court to beholden at Douglas 

the 30th day of March 1871 at 10 o'clock in the forenoon. Whereof all proper parties and persons are 

to have due and lawful notice.

Given at Douglas this 27th day of March 1871. R. Jebb Whereas Jane Cowley of the Clanagh in the 

Parish of Lezayre departed this life on the 23d day of March 1871 and died intestate and whereas 

at Ecclesiastical Court held at Douglas on the 30th day of March 1871 John Cowley her son was sworn 

administrator of the said Jane Cowley's estate and whereas her daughter Jane wife of Thomas Kneen late 

of the Isle of Man but now of the City of Rochester, State of New York, North America is entitled to the 

sum of twenty two pounds from the goods chattels and effects of the said estate and also the sum of 

fifty three pounds being her share or moiety of the sum of one hundred pounds left to the said Jane Cowley 

by a Deed of Trust granted by her father John Cowley of Crammag to his son John Cowley Junior dated 

the 17th day of May 1844 together with all interest due thereon up to the dates hereof. Now know all men 

by these present that we Thomas Kneen and my wife do hereby own and acknowledge to have received 

from the said administrator John Cowley the sum of seventy five pounds in full payment satisfaction and 

discharge of our said share or moiety of the said late Jane Cowley's estate and we do exonerate release acquit 

and discharge the said administrator John Cowley his executors and administrators of and from all further claim 

or liability whatever on account of or against the estate of the said Jane Cowley deceased. In witness where

of we have hereunto subscribed our names this the twenty sixth day of December A. D. Eight hundred seventy

This is the last will and testament of me John Cowley of Crammag in the parish of Lezayre who from 

due consideration of the uncertainty of this transistory life do make publish and declare this my last 

will in manner following:

First I leave devise and bequeath unto my second son Thomas Cowley also of the parish of Lezayre all 

and singular the whole of the estate and those lands and premises to me belonging called and known by 

the name of Creggan (Rocky Place) and Lhergy Voar and which estate lands and premises were purchased 

by me from John Stephen Coroner of Ayre Sheading by Deed of Sale bearing date the Twenty forth day of 

January One thousand eight hundred and sixty seven the same being bounded on the north by the lands of 

Thomas Cowley (Close) and John J. Quayle of Ballaskella on the East by the lands called Tholt e Wille on the 

south by the mountain called Dreem Corrody and the lands called Corrody on the west - To have and to hold 

the same with all appurtenances to the same belongingin or in anywise appertaining unto these said Thomas 

Cowley his heirs and assigns absolutely forever. Provided nevertheless that if my said son Thomas Cowley die 

without leaving lawful issue living at this decease then the said lands and premises of the Creggans and 

Lhergy Voar hereinbefore limited to him shall revert to my heir at law subject upon the less to and charged and 

chargeable with the right to my said son Thomas's wife (should he ever have a wife) of dower or widow right in 

and to the said lands and premises and also further subject to and chargeable with the right to my said son 

Thomas Cowley to mortgage and encumber the said estate lands and premises of the Creggan and Lhergy Voar 

to the amount of three hundred pounds sterling to be expended by him as he may think proper - and I hereby 

will and direct Thomas the said sum of three hundred pounds shall be and the same are hereby declared 

to be a good lien and charge upon the said estate lands and premises of the Creggan and Lhergy Voar herein 

before described and I also further ]eave and bequeath to my said son Thomas Cowley two cows and two 

heifers and I hereby will that he shall be allowed to choose the cattle from herd of cattle and I also leave him 

the one half of my stock of sheep as legacy. Secondly I leave and bequeath unto my two daughters namely 

Ann Quayle wife of John J. Quayle of Ballaskella and unto Elizabeth Craine wife of Thomas Craine of Kerlane 

the sum of one hundred pounds sterling each as legacy.

Thirdly I leave and bequeath unto my daughter Eleanor Margaret Cowley the sum of three hundred pounds 

sterling as legacy.

Fourthly I leave and bequeath unto my son William Cowley the sum of two hundred pounds sterling as legacy.

Fifthly I leave and bequeath to all and every person or persons claiming under this my will the sum of six pence 

as legacy.

Sixthly I leave and bequeath unto the Wesleyan Missionary Society the sum of twenty pounds sterling as legacy. 

And I hereby will and direct that neither of the hereinbefore described legacies except my son Thomas Cowley's 

are payable or to be paid until two years after my death.

And I give devise and bequeath unto my on John Cowley all and singular the whole of the residue and remainder 

of my real estate of every description and the whole of the remainder of my personal estate goods chattels 

and effects of whatever description the same may be subject nevertheless to and chargeable with the payment 

by my said son John Cowley of the hereinbefore described legacies and all my debts and funeral expenses - 

And I hereby will and direct that in the event of my personal estate being insufficient to pay off and discharge 

the before mentioned legacies that the deficiency or whatever portion of the aforesaid legacies or sums of money 

bequeathed by me and all my debts and funeral expenses that shall and will remain unpaid after my personal 

estate is exhausted shall be and the same are hereby declared to be a good lien and charge upon the lands 

and premises bequeathed to and possessed by my said son John Cowley called and known by the name of 

Rush Close situate in the parish of Lezayre aforesaid in the hands of the said John Cowley his heirs or assigns 

and I hereby nominate constitute and appoint my said son John Cowley sole executor of this my last will and 

testament. I declare this alone to be my will and I revoke all other wills made by me.

two of the subscribing witnesses to the execution of the foregoing paper writing purporting to be the last will 

and testament of John Cowley late of Crammag in the parish of Lezayre, deceased having made oath on the 

Holy Evangelists that said testator John Cowley when of sound and disposing mind memory and understanding 

duly signed and acknowledge the same as and for his last will and testament in their presence and at the same 

time in the presence of John Killip the other witness and that they at the same time in the presence of the said 

testator and of each other subscribed the same in attestation thereof

John Cowley the son of the deceased the executor named in said will is therefore sworn well and truly to fulfill 

and execute the said will and to administer all and singular the personal estate and effects of the said deceased 

according to law by paying the just debts and funeral expenses of the said deceased and the legacies contained 

in his said will so far forth as his estate and effects will thereto extend and the law bind him and to return to the 

Arehdeaeonts Registry of the Isle of Man a full true and perfect inventory of all and singular the said estate 

and effect with an accurate account of his administration thereof when thereunto lawfully required and to these 

ends he hath given pledges namely William Curphey Faragher of the Close e Volley and Thomas Kelly of 

Lhergyrhenny both in the parish of Lezayre who have entered into and executed the usual bond in the presence 

of the court.

after my decease as legacy. I leave and bequeath to my sister in law Jane Cowley widow of Philip Cowley the sum of five pounds sterling as legacy.

I leave and bequeath to my two nieces Margaret Ann Kelly and Susannah Kelly fifty pounds each the said 

sum to be payable and paid to them upon the youngest of them attaining the age of twenty one years. They 

to receive interest thereout at the rate of five per cent per annum from the time of my decease and in the event 

of one of them dying before the age of twenty one years and without lawful issue the survivor to received the 

sum of one hundred pounds.

I nominate constitute and appoint my brother Robert Cowley of the Cleanagh (Lezayre) whole and sole executor 

of this my will and residuary legatee of all the rest of my goods cash book debts credits and effects of what kind 

or nature soever and to see me decently buried at Ballaugh church with my forefathers. In witness whereof I

William Cowley deceased having made oath upon the Holy Evangelists that said William Cowley the testator 

when of sound and disposing mind memory and understanding duly signed and executed the same as and for 

his last will and testament in their presence Robert Cowley the sole executor therein named is therefore sworn 

well and truly to fulfil and execute the same according to law by paying the just debts and funeral expenses of the 

deceased and the legacies contained in his will so far forth as his goods and effects will thereto extend and the 

law bind him. And to return into the Episcopal Registry of the Isle and Diocese of Sodor and Mann a full true 

and perfect inventory of all and singular the said estate and effects with an accurate account of his acts and 

proceedings in the premises when thereunto lawfully required. And to these ends he hath given pledges namely 

Thomas Cowley of Narradale and Thomas Cowley of Ballaskella both in the parish of Lezayre who have entered into and executed the usual bond in the presence of the court. Probatum Est R. Jebb.

Know all men by these presents that I Suzannah Kelly of Ballavitchel in the parish of Marown do own and 

acknowledge to have received from Robert Cowley of the parish of Lezayre executor of the will of William Cowley 

formerly of the town of Douglas deceased the full amount of fifty pounds sterling with the interest due thereon 

the same being the amount of a legacy due to me under the will of the said William Cowley deceased and which 

bears date the 22d day of July 1868. Probate of which was granted to the said Robert Cowley at a Chapter Court 

holden at Ramsey on the 16th day of October 1868. And I do hereby direct and request that the said legacy shall 

be and stand cancelled upon the said will in the Episcopal Registry of this Diocese. In witness where I have hereunto subscribed my name this Second day of January One Thousand Eight Hundred and Seventy

Sacred to the memory of Jane Kelly otherwise Craine wife of Robert Kelly of Ballavitchel who departed 

this life the 25th August 1834 aged 61 years Also Thomas Kelly son of the above who departed this life 

at Ballavitchel in the 2nd of May 1872 aged 68 years. Also Ann wife of the above Thomas Kelly who died 

at Ballavitchel 19th Dec 1888 aged 78 years. Not lost to memory not lost to love but gone to their father's 

home above.

The humble petition of John Corlett of the Rock in the parish of Marown

farmer and Margaret Ann his wife and of Robert Hugh Gelling of

Ballavitchell in the said parish farmer and Susanna Jane his wife.

Sheweth as follows:

1. Ann Kelly of Ballavitchell aforesaid widow died on or about the 19th

day of December 1888 having first made her last will and testament bearing date the 11th day of 

June 1885 whereof she appointed the said Margaret Ann Corlett and Susanna Jane Gelling executrixes. 

Your petitioners are desirous that probate of the said will may be granted.

Wherefore petitioners humbly pray a hearing hereof and that your Honor may be pleased to grant 

probate of the said will to the said John Corlett and Robert Hugh Gelling in right of their said wives 

and petitioners will pray.

 

 

J. Kneale Ordered that this petition do come on to be heard at a Court to be held at Douglas 

on Monday the 21st day of January 1889 at 11 o'clock in the forenoon. Whereof all proper 

parties and persons are to have due and lawful notice.

This is the last will and testament of me Ann Kelly of Ballavitchell in the Parish of Marown widow, 

being of sound mind, memory, and understanding, at the making hereof. I leave and bequeath to my son

Thomas the sum of five shillings as legacy.

I leave and bequeath to my daughter Susannah Jane, all my household furniture, the corn, and all the sheep 

which I may have at the time of my decease.

I leave and bequeath to my two daughters Margaret Ann and Susannah Jane all and singular that parcel 

of land situate in the parish of Marown called and know by the name of Loudies Croft or some such name 

including both Quarterland and Intack. To have and to Hold the said Parcel of Land with all rights members 

and privileges to the same severally belonging or in anywise appertaining unto them my said two daughters 

their and each of their heirs and assigns as tenants in common commencing possess on and from the day of 

my decease.

I leave and bequeath to my said two daughters the whole of the rest residue and remainder of my personal 

estate of whatever the same may consist and wheresoever situate, share and share alike absolutely, and I 

nominate and appoint them my said two daughters joint executrices of this my will hereby revoking and setting 

aside any and all former will or wills by me heretofore made declaring this to be my last will and testament.
