DARROCH
Last Updated: December 21st, 2000
My husbands gr. grandfather was WILHELM ALEXANDER DIRIKS. Born approx. 1870-1880 in Norway. Parents unknown. Wilhelm was in the Navy and/or Merchant Marines. At some point prior 1900 he ended up in Glasgow Scotland where for reasons unknown he changed his surname to Darroch. We believe, but have not proven yet that the name was taken from his wifes side of the family, possibly her mothers maiden name. Wilhelm married MAGGIE (Margret) MACLEAN, marriage date unknown. We currently have no background information on her. Wilhelm and Maggie had four sons, WILLIAM DARROCH, FINDLAY DARROCH, GEORGE DARROCH, LACHLAN DARROCH. William was born in Glasgow Scotland, Sept. 10, 1906. The family left Scotland circa 1910 and briefly settled in either Chicago Illinois, US, or Buffalo NY, US. Soon after permanently settling in Toronto, Canada. For reasons unknown Wilhelm deserted his family in 1916 -1917 and moved  we believe to Buffalo NY, US. We also believe he went on to father other children who would all have been born Darrochs. Nothing else is known on Wilhelm and he is currently my "most wanted" ancestor. Maggie Maclean died prior to 1950 in Toronto, Canada. I am currently trying to locate her place of burial. My husbands line is through William Darroch. We do not currently know the name of his first wife, possibly Sarah, however we do know they had four children all born in Toronto, Canada. BOBBY DARROCH, ALEX DARROCH, MARGRET DARROCH. Margret married a man by the name of JIMMY BOWER. The youngest of these children was Findlay Darroch who passed away Sept. 1998. Williams second wife was CARMELA MAIO. She was born Ottawa Canada, 1918, to MICHAEL MAIO and KATHERINA or KAROLINA MAIO (maiden name unknown) who emigrated from ITALY year unknown. William and Carmela had 9 children, 7 still living. A daughter died at age 3 of brain tumour circa late 1940's, and son Frank passed away Sept. 1995, age 37, of a heart condition. William died in Toronto, Canada, 1976. Carmela died Toronto, Canada Febuary 9, 1985. It is believed they were all Roman Catholics on this branch.
