William R. D. Abernathy was born in Gaston County and was a farmer, prior to enlisting on October 6, 1861, at the age of 27.  He was wounded and captured at the battle of Hanover Court House on May 27, 1862.  He was confined at Fort Columbus, New York, where he died on June 18, 1862, of wounds and/or typhoid fever.  Private Abernathy is buried in the Cypress Hill Cemetery, Brooklyn, New York.
