Tobias Barnes resided in Alexander County and enlisted in Lenior County on April 18, 1862, in Company G.  He was 18 years old.  At the battle of Fredericksburg in December 1862, he was wounded in the arm and/or wrist.  He returned to duty in March-April, 1863 and was promoted to the rank of corporal in January-February 1864.  July-August 1864 brought promotion to the rank of sergeant and on April 2, 1865, he was captured near Jones Farm, Virginia.  Confined at Point Lookout, Maryland, he was released after taking the oath on June 23, 1865.  Sergeant Barnes is buried in the New Salem Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Alexander County, North Carolina.
