Poem

Passages from "The Ink Dark Moon"
Performed by Jane Luk

Kristi skates to poetry! She performed this unique and beautiful program during the 1998-99 Stars on Ice Tour and at the Winter Dreams on Ice 1999 in Brampton, Ontario Canada.

In the introduction of this program (from the Stars On Ice NBC broadcast) Kristi says:

"Poem has become a tribute to my Japanese heritage. It's a collection of 10 poems written by Japanese woman in the 8th century. In those days, it was the only way that they could express their love and intimacy."

~ Bamboo Flute background ~

1) Did he appear
because I fell asleep
thinking of him?
If only I'd known I was dreaming,
I'd never have awakened.

2) How invisibly
it changes color
in this world,
the flower
of the human heart.

3) In this world
love has no color -
yet how deeply
my body
is stained by yours.

4) Wakened by the scent
of flowering plum...
The darkness
of the spring night
fills me with longing.

5) The world rushes on
and now Spring is over
It seems that only yesterday
everything I saw
was in full flower.
6) More fragrant
because of the one
who saw and picked them,
these flowers,
precious, transient.

7) Even when a river of tears
courses through
this body,
the flames of love
cannot be quenched.

8) If this were a dream
I would surely
see you again -
Why must waking love
be left incomplete.

9) Seeing you is the thread
that ties me to this life -
if that knot
were cut this moment
I'd have no regret.

10) Watching the moon,
at dawn,
solitary, mid-sky,
I knew myself completely,
No part left out.
