If you really want a fun afternoon project and really buttermilk, Buy whipping
cream. Place in a large mayo jar (empty and cleaned of course) and cover.
Shake for a good while. The butter will form and the milk will separate.
My DD and I do this every now and then for a Samantha day when it rains! We
then have cinnamon toast with our REAL butter! I use the milk in cooking.

We are also making doll sized kites with shish kabob scewers for the sticks
and some hair elastics for the girls and dolls to match. For these, we are
tying on beads and ribbon and fabric cut with pinks to make them fancy onto
covered elastic bands. The strips hang down about 2 inches and you cover
the whole elastic.

One idea I did with my older daughter for her Sam was to make felt vests. I
let her and a friend use the sewing machine to add some decorative stitches,
but they were about 9. But with your close supervision, she could stitch up
a couple side and shoulder seams. Or she could stitch the seams by hand.
We also applied "appliques" by applying fusible web to the back of designs
on fabric, cut it out and ironed it on the vest. Didn't actually stitch
around it. Also made a dirndle skirt with a lot of my help. But you could
do that to coordinate with the fabric used for the appliques, and she could
be proud to have made half of the outfit.

I have been thinking about making visors and sandals for the girls from Fun
Foam and Tacky glue. Perhaps some goofy sunglasses or the like as well. I
think if I trace the shapes on the Fun Foam, my dd (7) will be more than able
to cut 'em out and glue 'em together!
