When knitting a sweater or something with buttonholes, an easy way to mark
placement for the button to be sewn on is to simply reverse a stitch near the
end of the row where you worked your buttonhole; in other words, knit where
you would pearl and pearl where you would knit (just one stitch will do it).

This is my own invention, to keep from tangling yarn when knitting from more
than one ball or skein of yarn: I take a large ziplock plastic bag and poke a
hole in the bottom or side of the bag, one hole for each ball of yarn. Put
the balls in the bag, and run the ends of the yarn through the holes (one
piece of yarn to each hole). Then close the top of the bag. Not only does
this keep one yarn from getting twisted around the other, it also keeps your
yarn clean.  I once knitted on a two-strand afghan while sitting on the beach;
the sand made its way to parts of me I would have preferred it not get into,
but the afghan yarn stayed relatively untouched! But enough about me. . .
