The
sons of Jacob were jealous of their brother, Joseph.
They
threw him into a pit and when some Midianite merchantmen came along they
sold him for twenty pieces of silver. The Midianites then sold him
to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh's, and captain of the guard.
The
Lord was with Joseph and he prospered in the land of Egypt.
After
a time Pharoah's had a dream whereby seven well favored and fatfleshed
cows came up out of the river and
they
fed by the meadow. Then seven other cows, ill favoured and
leanfleshed, stood by the other cows upon the brink of the river.
The ill favored, leanfleshed cows did eat up the well favored and fat cows.
Joseph
was sent to interpret Pharaoh's dream. The interpretation was there
would be seven years of plenty in all the land of Egypt followed by seven
years of very
grievous
famine.
Pharaoh
told Joseph that forasmuch as God hath shown thee all this there is none
so discreet and wise as thou and
Pharaoh
set Joseph over all the land of Egypt.
Joseph
set up storehouses and filled them with corn to numerous to be numbered
preparing for the seven lean years that were to come.
The
countries surrounding Egypt were hard hit by the famine forcing them to
go to Egypt to buy corn for food. Jacob sent his sons to Egypt to
buy corn, and while they
didn't
recognize their brother Joseph, he did recognize them.
Eventually,
Joseph let himself be known to his brothers and had them bring Jacob and
all the Israelites to dwell in the land of Egypt.
After
Pharaoh's death a new king rose up over Egypt who didn't know Joseph.
They were grieved because of the children of Israel and made them serve
them with rigor.
After
many years of bondage, God called to Moses to deliver the Israelites out
of the hands of Egyptian bondage.
After
many plagues, some being the water turned into blood, the frogs, the locust,
boils, hail and fire, each time Pharaoh would promise them their freedom
but then harden his heart and wouldn't let them go.
The
last plague was that the firstborn of every man and beast would die.
The Israelites were commanded to take a lamb for the Passover and take
the blood in the basin and strike the lintel and the two side post of the
door and the death angel would passover and their firstborn would be saved.
We
are saved by the blood of Jesus, we will be "passed over" if we have
received the blood of Jesus. We receive the blood of Jesus when we
are buried with Him in baptism.
