GREEN, Martha-79 HEADS OF FAMILIES

DESCENDENTS FROM SEVENTY NINE EARLY IMIGRANT HEADS OF FAMILIES, by Elston, James Strode FHC 973/D2el Volume 1 127p. Index GREEN (Burlington, New Jersey)
MARTHA GREEN married March 6, 1781 Samuel Zelley, son of John and Rachel.
He was dismissed 5 mo. 1781 from Burlington Monthly meeting for marrying out of
order, that is not by Friends' ceremony. A considerable but perhaps not as complete
search as possible has failed to find her parents. A guess might be that John Green of
Wellingborroow, Burlington County, New Jersey was her grandfather. His will of
November 27, 1732 left his plantation, partly on Ancocas Creek, with 300 acres in
Hunterdon County, to his wife Jane, his eldest son Thomas 21, and other children, all
under age,- Joseph, Jacob, Elizabeth, Martha, and John. This John (possibly son of
John of Mansfield Township who died 1694) had married Jane Stokes. Thomas
married 12 mo. 8, 1743 Hannah Arnal when all the beneficiaries of John's will, except
Martha, signed the marriage record. Thomas died 1754 leaving 2 sons and 3
daughters. Joseph married 1 mo. 1, 1753 Sarah Mobb and he died 1763. A John
married 1745 Catherine Husted. Among the 8 children of Martha Green who Married
1781 there was none that seem to give any indication. Although he lived so many
years earlier, it may be noted that Richard Green was one of the first arrivals in West
Jersey. "In the 10th month O.S., arrived the Shield from Hull--and dropped anchor
before Burlington, being the first ship that came so far up the Delaware" ("The History
of the Colony of Nova Caesaria or New Jersey", 108, by Samuel Smith). A personal
brief study of Surrogates' and County Clerk's records in Mount Holly failed to disclose
additional information.
Another slight possibility is that she is the daughter of Daniel Green who married
Burlington County June 1, 1740 Mary Johnson, But this Daniel doesn't appear to been
son of John. The Johnson name is intriguing because my grandmother, Rachel
Johnson Field, was daughter of Martha's daughter Ann, so Ann may have given this
daughter as a middle name the surname of her grandmother. The difference between
Johnson and Johnston isn't significant because I don't really know which was my
grandmother's name. On the other hand my grandmother may have received her
name from a Rachel Johnson who was the third wife of her uncle Thomas.
