RACHAEL GRIFFITH-79 HEADS OF FAMILIES

DESCENDENTS FROM SEVENTY NINE EARLY IMIGRANT HEADS OF FAMILIES, by Elston, James Strode FHC 973/D2el Volume 1 127p. Index GRIFFITH

RACHAEL GRIFFITH married 9 mo. 1748 (Lee) John Zelley, son of Daniel.
Considerable search has been made to find her parents. "Records of Richland
Monthly Meeting" show her marriage proposed 2d time 10 mo. 15, 1748 and 11 mo. 19,
1748 "Report that it has been accomplished". Were these reported to Richland Monthly
meeting perhaps two months after they occured in Burlington?
"Records of Burlington and Mount Holly Monthly Meeting" show cetificate 12 mo. 6,
1748-9 Rachel Zelley from Richland Monthly Meeting. If we didn't supposedly know
the children of Abraham Griffith of Richland, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, we would
be quite sure that Rachel was his daughter. His son, Abraham, lived several years
from 1742 in Burlington Co. and the elder Abraham's sister, Dianna Hawlings, lived
there in Wellingsboro. But supposedly all of Abraham's children and grandchildren
were given in an article in "Early Friends of Upper Bucks", 211, by C.V. Roberts and
W.S. Ely. As far as appears from this article Abraham (1680-1760) had only one
brother, Evan, whose family is given in a manuscript file in Genealogical Society of
Pennsylvania library, which includes no Rachel. Abraham had two grandchildren with
the name, Rachel. It may be noted in the hope of future clues that May Griffith married
9-7-1748 at Burlington; that Amy, daughter of John Griffith, late of Darby, Pennsylvania
is mentioned in Friends' records in 1767; and that a will record in Doylestown, Bucks
Co. of John, 6-24-1713, proved 10-27-1718 of Woodbridge, E.J. mentions wife,
Elizabeth and daughters Mary, Martha, Ann, Susannah and cousin Abraham. John
married 1709 Elizabeth Gach or Gauge, Middletown Monthly Meeting, Bucks Co.
There is considerable published on the Griffith families, including that in Bucks County,
Pennsylvania such as in "Historical Collections Relating to Gwynedd", 99, by H.M.
Jenkins. It appears that Rachel must have been some relative of Abraham, perhaps
an orphan brought up by him.
